What was the justification for Stoops keeping Joe Mixon on the team?

I was really surprised that Stoops, Castiglione, and Boren didn't act decisively back in 2014. They had to know that it would get out one day and look incredibly bad. They saw what happened with Ray Rice. It was an incredibly ill-advised gamble. And I am completely setting aside the moral aspects of allowing a guy like this to play on your team.

Just watched the video I am ashamed I hold Ok coach Bob Stoops in
such high regard. I just can't believe this guy was allowed to play. Have
no idea how her dad was able to deal with him playing. I have 3 grown daughters
I would of spent every dime on a lawyer to see that he never played football again. Winning
has become more important than having young men treat women with respect. College sports
is out of control.

Well she did shove him and according to witnesses call him a n****** so it wasn't like she was totally innocent and I don't think a lot of people would have showed her a bunch of respect in that situation but...

I would have had no problem had Stoops kicked Mixon off the team when it happened. He was suspended for a season so it wasn't like he wasn't punished at all but yeah don't hit women and you don't have this problem. He should have turned around and walked out the door but he didn't. When the story originally broke it had Mixon following her in the bathroom and beating her up. It looks like it actually happened as Mixon and his lawyers claimed it did.

Mixon will play in the NFL and she can try to sue him again.

I don't care what a woman calls a man or hits a man you don't hit a woman. It
is very simple nothing ever justifies hitting a women. I wouldn't hold my breath
he gets drafted NFL is taking a hard line with these guys that abuse woman. Running backs
or a dime a dozen and he is not the best back by far in the draft.

So women can just attack a person and expect nothing in return? She assaulted him. Seriously. Did he respond well? No. Is he a piece of trash? yes. Did he deserve his suspension? yes. But she still assaulted him. If you don't want to get hit, don't put your hands on people.

Why did he follow her into the place and then he spit in her face (it appears)?

You don't punch a woman.I figured you'd rush to his defense. If that was a Mizzou guy you'd be all over it .

First and foremost there is no excuse for what he did. I have had that opinion from the beginning. What happened was well documented, not sure why the big uproar just from seeing the video. YES she did push him... AND hit him first... yes, that is technically assault. No she was not charged, but the same people only charged him is a misdemeanor (perhaps because of her actions, I dont know) And as for the spiting.. it was actually the other way around. The original reports said that she was accused of spitting on him. (this started outside)
Lets not act like he was not punished. He was suspended for the whole season. Now, was that enough? That part is up for debate, without question. Again, he was totally wrong for hitting her, anyone that says different is beyond crazy. But lets not act like she was totally innocent in this situation. Her actions led to it.

if he spit on her, then I can see why she went after him, seems she goes all Roseanne on him, the spit was assault and battery, her retaliation is the same, it is the final clocking by him that did some real damage, no girls should not be able to do what they want, I get tired of hearing that, I was taught to respect women, but today, if they start or retaliate they are to be held liable, both should get something out of it, his penalty should be higher

You can write this without the sexism.

I don't care what a person calls a man or hits a man you don't hit a person. It is very simple nothing ever justifies hitting a people [sic].

With that being said, I do not agree. Every person has the right to self defense.

I don't like OU, but I respect most of the OU fans on this board...

...which is why I'm so surprised some of you are coming to Mixon's and/or Stoops' defense here. We're talking about a college football player with quite a bit more power in his punch than most normal college bar hoppers. He literally caved this girls face in and some of you are trying to say she had it coming.

And in response to this nonsense that it's sexist to teach a young man NEVER to hit a woman, I guess you can call me sexist; save for life threatening circumstances, I've taught my son since he was old enough to understand that I man never has a justifiable reason to hit a woman, EVER!

What a world we live in!

Only if you are defending yourself against being killed is it okay to hit a women. I don't
care if she slaps you punches you or kicks you as a true man you turn and walk a way.
All this entitlement that because she hit me or spit on me or called me names it is okay
to strike a woman please that is weak. We are to be men not little boys that has to get
our evens. What is he going to do in the NFL when he is insulted by other team fans and
called racial names go into the stands. When you decide to be a big time athlete it
comes with the territory that you control your self at all times. Until all coaches take stands
that if their players strike a women under any condition they will be dismissed and lose
their scholarship the problem will remain. Coaches need to get a back bone and stand up
for what is right.

And this is why Ladies step over the line And hit Men... They know They can get away with it.. Everyone should be taught you don't hit anyone And if you do expect to get hit back.

Like 1 of my favorite comedians says There's 100s of justifiable reasons to hit a Woman.

I'm not saying what he did wasn't wrong but this argument a Man should never touch a Woman is crap.. Don't want your jaw broke don't touch someone. Now if she hadnt touched him and he hit her By all means but 2 people did wrong here not just the Man.

So then by your rationale, it's ok for a grown man to punch a pre teen child in the face if that child pushes him? And if you say no, why not? (Given the standards you have listed above...)

Full disclosure: I believe in spanking, but would never punch a child.

Really ? Punching a child ? She pushed And smacked him. If it happened to me I don't know what i woulda done but im not 1 that agrees Its ok to Let a Lady touch me. I guess it would all come down to reason with me.

My son also gets spankings... I was raised By My mother And Grand mother And was taught you never hit ANYONE And if you get hit then hit back(And By no means do i mean children). Girls don't get special rights to strike a Man period.. Guess My point is you don't touch anyone period.

And if you're saying a woman = a child then thats something else
Have you never heard the expression "women and children first"? What do you think that means and why does it exist? (Or is it dead outside of my household?)

Tell me again why it's ok to punch a lady in the face but not a child?

Age ? Know Better ? And i know some women who can scrap.. You're missing the whole Its not right to HIT ANYONE. Saying a Man should never hit back is teaching a girl if i hit him he won't hit me back And Well thats just wrong. If you're a Lady you should know better don't put a Man in that situation

Ive been with my Lady 16 yrs And she agrees a Lady should also never hit a Man. If a girl is brought Up right shed know this.

That's another sexist phrase, just like "You should never hit a woman."

If you want to say that you should not hit another person who is not a true physical threat to you ... great, then say that. If you want to say that the weakest people should be the first off the sinking ship ... great, then say that. To assume that all children and all women are physically inferior to all men is sexist.

On a sinking ship, should an 80 year old disabled man exit after a 30-something female professional athlete due to their genitalia?

Agree to disagree I guess. If a man ever hits my daughter I will beat his ass; if my son ever hits a lady, I will beat his ass too.

Call me old-fashioned.

If I ever have a daughter she'll be tought If you hit a Man he May hit you back but hitting anyone is wrong. Let it be known im not saying If u have a problem with a girl hit her im saying you shouldnt be touched no matter your Sex

That's called sexist, and sadly, that isn't as old-fashioned as it should be.

You should have the identical response if a woman hits your daughter or if your son hits a man.

Wow. Ok...
"Women and children first" s another sexist phrase, just like "You should never hit a woman."
I take it you think it's sexist to hold the door open for a lady too?

Academia tells us that humans are nothing more than another species in the animal kingdom, and throughout the many species in the animal kingdom their exists physiological differences between sexes; is it sexists to say that the female black widow is significantly larger and stronger than the male black widow?

Depends on how that 80 year old was raised; you'd better believe if I were that 80 year, the lady would go first (does that alone make the 80 year old sexist? He'd be a hero on my book!)

I hold the door open for any person behind me. I don't request information about their genitalia prior to doing so.

There's nothing wrong with stating facts about a group. But to assume that what may be true of the average within a group is also true of individuals within the group is most likely sexist, or racist, etc ... To assume all women are weak and need to be cared for by strong men is stupid, both because many women are strong and many men are weak.

The hypothetical had nothing to do with choices of the individuals involved. It has to do with the person in charge who was making the decisions. If you chose to let a physically capable woman exit a sinking before a disabled man because of their genitalia then you are a sexist.

Did the punishment fit the crime, in your opinion?

Also, since when is a redshirt season "punishment?"

If I had been the head coach I probably would have dismissed him but given the circumstances it would not been as easy as some here suggest it is. Anyone that has a conscience doesn't feel that if they are suspended for a year that they are just being redshirted. It would be embarrassing.

Mixon was clearly out of line. Whether he was assaulted first, spit on and had racial insults hurled at him he still shouldn't have decked her. If all those things did happen then that is a consideration in how steep his punishment was. The legal system decided it warranted misdemeanor assault so Stoops punishment was consistent with that.

I'm not really defending Mixon at all. I am defending Stoops. Even after this incident in a poll of college football coaches when asked what coach would you most want your son to play for...Stoops was chosen. If you think Stoops was wrong here then fine. He still has a reputation as a high character guy.

Sorry you were raised to be sexist and are not ashamed of it.
If it's sexists to teach my son to open the car door for a lady, or to give up his chair for a lady, or if it's sexist of that 80 year old man to give up the last seat on a life boat to a lady, than guilty! (though I think even most learned people would call that chivalry)
I hold the door open for any person behind me. I don't request information about their genitalia prior to doing so.
I take it you've kept your nose in a book so long that you can no longer tell the difference just by looking...?
To assume all women are weak and need to be cared for by strong men is stupid, both because many women are strong and many men are weak.
Especially men who hit women (and you'll never once see anywhere on this board where I've said women "need to be cared for by a strong man"; it was my strong, single mother who instilled in me the principals I've described).
If you chose to let a physically capable woman exit a sinking ship before a disabled man because of their genitalia then you are a sexist.
I take it if you were that 80 year old man you'd tell that physically capable woman to wait her turn? To me, that's far worse than chivalry (err, sorry! Sexism, not chivalry ;))

Oh, that's a harsh punishment for caving a girl's face in. Embarrassment, GMAFB. He lost 0 playing time.

Or because stoops is willing to let anyone play for him, no matter how they treat women.
