West Platte Football Petition

Freaking ridiculous unless he's beat a kid or something similar. No one is going to win with the kids they have had and have coming through there recently. People are so unrealistic.

Yep, it didn't sound promising, as you have stated here, with the petition stating the Jr. High WP team did not win a game, had a record low of points scored and a record of points given up. Going to continue to be tough no matter who is at the helm.

People would flip out if coaches made petitions to have parents produce better athletes.

Wouldn't you love if you could put one of those parents in charge for a few days! It always has amazed me how people think they know how to coach, but in reality have no idea what goes into it. Same with how blinded they are about their child's ability.

I know a coach who had a parent complaining about the team's defense. Coach brought him in for a meeting, said ok dad, 1st draw up the defense we are currently running, then draw me up the changes you think would make sense. Dad barely got out anything more than "uh, well, uh uh" . You get the point.

Sometimes the talent just isn't there, the KCI is a hard conference too! WP has had some success there in the past. Hope he finds a better job and leaves.

I like the dad coaches who say crap like "we never lost a game 1st through 5th grade"

If your Jr High teams are not winning, you will not win at the JV and Varsity level. Parents do not realize that.

Coaches do though have a large part in getting kids out and developing young players.

Back in about 1988 I remember some goofy lookin guy named Jerry Kill working parents and kids all summer during baseball. He had every kid convinced if they joined the football team,,came in to summer weights and worked hard they could be champions.

Rest is history

And then the Kearney Bulldogs came to town in 2002 and 2003, and showed them that sometimes, there is just too much opponent talent on the field to win.

You do realize that in 2002 Webb had already lost 2 games, and in 2003 we had already lost three games before being beat by Kearney in the playoffs don’t you?????

You beat two subpar Webb teams with the best teams you have ever had
Kudos to you.

The only time Kearney had good teams was when they had great individual players. Be good a couple of years then suck for 3-4 years and not even be able to compete in districts

Hopefully see your Bulldogs in Columbia in two weeks!!!!

That kind of attitude is why there will never be. Back in 92-93 we had a kid at QB win two state championships that looking at him you wouldn’t have issued him gear to practice

I mean the man may be a great guy I have not a clue. But over the last five years his teams have won a total of 6 games at two different schools????

Find Jerry and send him up this way.

@WPAlum2010 any insight into this?
I know nothing more than the story above. A lot of things have gone on. Most were talked about in article above. The administration will have meetings in closed session about things that have gone on. Will know more in the coming weeks. When I hear more details I will share.

Amazes me how many times I've heard the "they were undefeated in little league" line over the years. I can't figure out who is losing these pee wee football games?

Adam was the best running back in junior football and you never gave him a chance!!!
Sir, that was 5th grade, Adam was the biggest kid in his class and he hasn’t grown an inch since then.

This exactly is the story of the best 2 RBs in jr. high that I played with. Neither ever saw a snap of varsity time and for good reason. Everyone else grew.

Paul Thomas is a top-notch dude. He's played some good teams competitively, right on the edge, but I have lost track this year. The enrollment is very small. Nice town.

The teams at West Platte have been very uncompetitive for his 3 years at the helm. Blown out by everyone in the KCI. Haven’t won a conference game since the year before he came in. He hasn’t helped the program a ton. He came in stabilized things after the passing of Coach Dannaman. But it should’ve been a 1 year thing. Should’ve let someone new start over last year. Yeah the talent at WP hasn’t been what it was in years past, but he’s had enough to win more than 1 game the last 2 years. I personally think it’s time to restart. Give a young coach a start. Just my opinion as a West Platte Alum

43-0. Or 44-0 in 2003? Baha

Weston isn’t dying..... the enrollment at West Platte is going up every single year. We are up in the 140’s and only are growing every year.,

Although there has been SOME talent there, that conference is a class 1/2 meat grinder.

I also don't think that a petition should be something the board looks at when hiring/firing coaches.

Listen to the stakeholders, but we don't need schools pressured by the mob voices.

2018-2019 177 (Actual for 9-11 is 133)

2016-2018 170

2014-2016 190

2012-2014 205

2010-2012 216

2008-2010 235

In 1980-1981, the enrollment was 295.

Thanks for numbers. Weston used to be a class 2 even. They are dying a slow death like a lot of small towns.

People aren’t moving in because it’s too expensive to live there, not enough jobs, and too far from the city to drive to a job.

It’s not going to get better there and the town has unrealistic expectations. They want days of old and they’re never going to get that again.

I’m posting without having a clue about Westran, but used to be on the same coaching staff as PT many years ago when we were both starting out.
He’s a good man.

I agree. Great guy.

Took marceline to state not long ago if I remember right. Great coach.

Uhhhh........WHAT? Pretty sure the stakeholders' right to petition the government (here, the governing body of the school district) is guaranteed by the first and fifth amendments to the Constitution. I think it is the board's duty to look at the petition and consider it and its ramifications no matter how loud the voices. Of course they are going to feel some pressure, that's the nature of being an elected representative. Its just that when feelings are inflamed and the rhetoric is loud is when you hope you have elected board members with some visceral fortitude to do the right thing for your school without fear of personal repercussions.

Nobody is denying anybody their constitutional rights by ignoring their petition. If they were arrested for drawing up a petition, that would be the case. A school board has to make a lot of tough decision that may or may not be popular. It's what they're elected to do. They shouldn't fire someone based on a petition, and they shouldn't retain someone based on a petition.

I'm just not good at expressing myself. I don't recall saying or even intimating anything you refer to except that boards may need to make a decision that may not be popular. I know I didn't say anyone's constitutional rights were being denied or violated and I know I didn't say they should fire or retain anyone on the basis of a petition.
