Do they factor in coaching? Because Kearney was favored to win the first time and we know how that went. This game will determine which staff made the necessary adjustments. I think I know how this is going to play out.

Kearney wins by DDs
DD's Are a win for everyone!

Kearney will need to make major adjustments schematically and not commit so many obvious penalties if they want to escape Smithville. Smithville controlled the pace and action all game. Smithville played great assignment football. For those reason Ill take the favorite, smithville in the rematch.

I’ve watched 3 of Kearney’s games in person and overall have not been impressed with the game plans. To me it’s a pretty simple recipe for them to win. We shall see if this staff gets it done. The offensive play caller will be under the microscope.

Their offensive play calling is sloppy. They play too many bad teams to figure things out when it comes to playing good teams.

It wasn’t a slight at you. I truly think Smithville has a chance. But 14 would take turnovers possibly.

From what I've seen from Smithville, they are a sound team. They could rip right through all the way to state. Then lose by 14-20 in the state champ game. Probably everyone on that side of the bracket will to the winner of Ladue/WP, Webb (who I give a 40% chance of making it.)

Class 4 and 6 look really top heavy to me. I’m I wrong? Maybe add class 3?

I think this side of the state is a 2 horse race....LaDue and then WC. West Plains is unproven and has never faired well against WC or CJ.

On Kearney's side, adjustment in all phases of the game will be interesting to see. IMO, there is as much room for the D to adjust as there is the O - they have to get Smithville's offense off the field, if they continue to play soft and let Smithville move the chains, tomorrow could be a long night. I'd love to see Gray tighten the corners and let 97 put some heat on their qb...of course he's never really done that. I hope they don't go into the re-match thinking that the L was entirely on the O.

Offensively, they're really limited to a couple playmakers, 3 needs to play both sides of the ball for the entire game. They did make an effort to get the TE the ball a couple times last Friday - don't know if that was for show, but I'd hate to have the game come down to that (when they clearly haven't felt comfortable all season). The O does have to make Smithville pay for stacking the box, Smithville's going to stick with that until it breaks. On special teams, they have to get Connery going - that could be the difference Friday night.

I am skeptical that we see substantial changes - they've pretty much done what they're going to do all year (and gotten by with it partially because most teams haven't been able to stop it.)

I agree, this Webb team is about 10% below their average team for the past 30 years. :)

I have thought the same.
Crazy to feel like they are 'slightly less than' past years and see how great they still are! >>I can say this because I'm not a homer<<!
Sounds like that Class 2 school up the road is in the same place this year.
Enjoying the commentary on Smithville!

I hope the KMO coaches use what weapons they have and not let subpar players keep playing on the offense just because they are seniors! They need to find someone who can lead block for 34 and the two that have been attempting to all year are not the answer! They have gotten away with it against poor teams! They have two kids on the other side of the ball that I believe would pave a path to the end zone for 34 but I think the coaches are too afraid to hurt the feelings of a few soft seniors! JMO! I hope like hell they get the job done!

Wow calling high school kids soft. Guess that makes you Tommy Tough Nuts huh? Smithville v KMO is only game I have watched Kearney play all year. Not sure the Full Backs (I assume that's who you referring to as they rotated series) was the only problem.

I don't think they played soft against Smithville the first time. Smithville had the ball for almost 27 min of the game time, and was only able to score 17. One TD drive was barely by the skin of their teeth, with a couple fourth down conversions. The other TD was a short kick to the 35, followed by 15 yard, 15 yard, and 5 yard penalties, which basically game them a super short field with 2 min remaining.

On Offense, K went after big pass plays, stopping the clock and not coming through on them. Thus, they had three and outs that ate up no time. They cannot do that again. They only rushed Connery 13 times, and he only got 3 yards a carry. He needs to rush for 25-30 times, and be patient. Run clock, and ball control game. This is like a late 1970s/early 1980s ball control field position game.

If K runs clock and gets it to 50/50, they win. Simple math. Smithville couldn't move the ball on them.

Of course, their major injury may change that.

You didn't watch the game then...corners were 8-10 yards off the receiver all night long (as they have been all season - that's Gray's D). Smithville took advantage of it and played ball control. Platte County likely would have done the same thing had it not been raining and limited their passing game.

I hate that D - the dawgs haven't seen a receiver all season that requires that kind of cushion (I could see it with Gicento & PC's last year - but they haven't seen anything close to those guys this year.)

That's what they'll be saying about Coach next week if Kearney doesn't pull this one out (although I'd put it on the staff - not on the kids that play.) Gray likes to play the seniors - I think it was a local consensus that approach (with his secondary) ended last years season prematurely.

We need to watch being so critical of Josh Gray and staff. They have had a very good season. I’ve been a tad critical of the playcalling but overall they’ve done an above average job. He followed in the footsteps of a legend and expecting him to coach to that level is unrealistic.

10-0 = 10% below an average WC team? That’s funny. So analytically for a team that is considered 0.9 units WC stands 10-0 and still considered one of the top contenders for another title in 2018 at what coefficient of single unit WC does a WC team lose a game? 0.85 WC? 0.75 WC? Is mini-Ditka involved? What are the weather conditions that have an adverse affect on units WC? What is the conversion rate for units WC to units of any other team in class 4? Is 0.9 WC more or less than 1.0 remainder of class 4 teams? Lol

From watching many games from the other side I have a feeling that number needs to get down to about a .5 for a normal high school team to stand a decent chance of winning.

Particularly in 2013 it was K giving then star SR RB Broughton special teams chances that propelled what looked early on like an average team all the way to the C5 semis. In other words could not agree with your last sentence more............

This could be a "final exam" for this second year coaching regime. Going out in the second round of district play and losing twice in a three game span to a next door town who K had not lost to as long as I can remember would be tough. That being said I don't envy the pressure Gray and staff must feel having to follow what Jones accomplished.

It is the level of EXPECTATIONS Jones created that puts a ton of pressure on Gray. Nothing less than a trip to Columbia will feel like a successful season for most KTown faithful and I would admit to being one of them BUT I do know this Smithville team has a "special" feel to it I have not seen there in my four decades following this sport in this area..........

Toppy living in the past. Ironically Kdawgs lost to Staley and Smithville that year as well. WEBB did lose so no buts make a difference to the score but WEBB had over a hundred yards more offense. Only way Kearney wasn't beat down was WEBBs three turnovers killed them..This years offense isn't as great as most Cards offenses but is better than 2015s was.

Pot meet kettle..............:). BTW do your homework K lost to Liberty North in 2015 the game they lost their starting QB................

I don't view State as a requisite; the litmus test for me is getting out of districts. I don't see ANY excuse for losing to either this years Smithville or Platte County team. I wasn't as impressed with Smithville pulling that game out, as I was disappointed with Kearney's failure to put it away. That was likely Smithville at it's best, beating Kearney at it's worst, with some help from the zebra, mental mistakes from the Dogs & a refusal of the Dogs staff to make half-time adjustments.

Smithville's staff did an outstanding job of scheming to shut down K's offense and offensively, they took what the Dogs were giving.

LOL, good one.. I recall it a little differently, great game by two great teams (with a lot of great players on both sides.) I don't think the young man that has played MLB for Mizzou from day 1, would have let y'all beat him down.

From the corner coverage perspective, I see what you mean.
