Top Mo High school football coaches with no state titles

Ampipe head coach Vernon Nickerson. He ran practices like a drill sergeant, golf club in hand, grabbing players’ facemasks to ensure he had their attention. Is he doing it to tougher them up? Or was he just a jerk?

His 6-2 Monster Stack if the stuff of legends, for teams that never got it done.

Not in MO at the moment, but I would put him on this list. Steve Ary. Willow, Mtn Grove and West Plains. He is a great coach. I don't know his record off top of my head, but it is really good.

He was 182-95 in Missouri with who knows how many playoff appearances with Mtn Grove and Willow. I’m pretty sure he had back to back semifinal appearances with Mtn Grove

When he showed up at WP, the Zizzers were 0-10. When he left, they were 12-1

Joel Wyatt 14yrs 129-40 1 state runner, 3 other semi final appearances at 3 different schools!

Poss Jackson. Coached at Pierce City and Aurora, in the 50's. Refereed football and basketball into the 80's.

Great name for a coach.

Matt Haug has to be pretty high on the list. 265-108 at NC, Dexter, and Potosi. Made the finals once and semis 5x, but never could get over the hump. The Potosi program had won 6 games total in 6 years and he went 29-11 in his time there.

Tony Braby. I believe he took Sweet Springs to the finals and then had Tipton in several state semi-finals. In the Hall of Fame as well.

Lot of worthy names is this thread but my vote would be with Queasy. As a coach Ary always reminded me of the Bum Phillips quote about Bear Bryant, "He can take his'n and beat your'n, and then turn around and take your'n and beat his'n." I consider Ary to be one of the best evaluators of football talent (getting the right players in the right position for their ability) around. Rate him right up there with Pete Adkins and Bob Shore in that regard.

Steve Hancock; 9 years at Stockton, 25 Branson, I belive 6 at Springfield Catholic. 310 wins, District championships in clases 2,3,4,5. Two second place finishes, 4 or 5 semi finals, 27 or 28 yrs straight without a losing season. Plus, an even better person and mentor.

Props to FS for starting this thread. I never really stopped to think about how many quality coaches (people) toiled long, and successfully, even though they were never able to grab that championship ring. I salute them all.

Of course I would like to throw Darin Acklin from MVBT Liberty on there. Took over a school that was winless when he got them and left there with a dozen or more district titles and conference championships. Definitely had a team that could capture the state a few different times.

Did Chuck Literes get a title as Head Coach at Harrisonville? If not he built the foundations of good programs at Maryville and Fort Osage but never won it all.
Love me some C.Literes!
