Missouri is on the road at Kent State this Sunday. Excellent matches at 133 and 149.

A lot of seniors wrestling for the Flashes could make them dangerous opponents even though

the majority are unranked.

Kent State (5-1, 1-0 MAC) hosts No. 4 Missouri (4-0, 2-0 MAC) Sunday inside the M.A.C. Center at 2 p.m. The Golden Flashes are off to their best start in dual meets in six years and are No. 16 in the latest InterMat Tournament Rankings.

Dual Success
Since Head Coach Jim Andrassy's third season (2005-06), the Golden Flashes have gone 133-64-1 in dual meets and 42-14-1 in MAC dual meets. Since the 2010-11 season, the Flashes have gone 20-8 at home.
This season, Mack McGuire, Kyle Conel, Ian Miller, Mike DePalma and Cole Baxter are all undefeated in dual meets.

The Opponent
The Tigers have won three straight Mid-American Conference tournaments and are 17-1 in conference duals since joining the MAC. Missouri's lineup is highlighted by 2014 NCAA champion J'Den Cox, who is a two-time MAC champion at 197. Cox and junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes each won championships at the Las Vegas Invitational, helping the Tigers to a team title. Redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis and senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler each placed third in Las Vegas. Last weekend, Missouri knocked off defending NCAA champion Ohio State 26-17 at the Hearnes Center.

History vs. Missouri
Kent State is 1-7 all-time against Missouri with its only victory coming in the finals of 2012 Virginia Duals. Last December, the Tigers topped the Golden Flashes 26-14 in Columbia. Mack McGuire, Ian Miller and Tyler Buckwalter all claimed two-point victories. The Tigers topped the Flashes 24-9 the last time the teams met in Kent (2013). Miller and McGuire each earned victories at the M.A.C. Center.

Possible Heavyweight Rematch
In the round of 32 at the Las Vegas Invitational, Stephen Suglio met James Romero and fell behind 6-0 in the first period. By the third period, Suglio narrowed the gap to 8-5 and took Romero down to his back for a pin.

MAC Wrestler of the Week
• Redshirt junior Zach Synon (Cary, Ill.) was named MAC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 16. Synon provided the most electric moment of #TigerStyle's win over then-No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday when he pinned No. 5 Johnni DiJulius in the third period at 5:59. The Tiger grappler also picked up a 9-4 win against Cameron Kelly of then-No. 21 Ohio on Sunday. Synon is now 12-3 on the season, 4-0 in duals, and ranked as high as No. 11 in the individual rankings (TheOpenMat.com). The Cary, Ill., native has amassed 16 dual points in four matches.

Miklus Named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
• After two dual wins last weekend, including a 15-0 technical fall (6:41) over No. 11 Kenny Courts of No. 3 Ohio State, redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Willie Miklus was named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Dec. 14. The Tigers and Buckeyes were tied, 17-17, with two matches to go when Miklus and Courts took to the mat. Miklus' five team point's pushed Mizzou ahead for good, helping #TigerStyle knock off the defending NCAA champion Buckeyes, 26-17.

Romero Earns First Dual Win

• Freshman James Romero earned the first dual victory of his career on Sunday when he defeated James Webb of Ohio by way of a 9-4 decision. Romero is now 10-10 on the year. In eight of Romero's 10 wins, he has pinned his opponent, ranking first on the team in falls. The Tiger freshman placed third at the UCM Open on Nov. 7.

Mayes Undefeated

• Redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes has yet to drop a match this season, posting a 13-0 this season, 4-0 in duals. Mayes, an NCAA All-American (seventh place) a season ago at 141 pounds, has not had any struggles after being bumped up to 149 pounds at the beginning of the year. Mayes has captured two open championships this year, winning the Joe Parisi Open and the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The final three wins at Cliff Keen came over opponents currently ranked in the top-20. The Illinois native has scored bonus points in eight of 13 matches this season, tallying six major decisions and two falls. In Mayes' four dual wins, he has outscored his opponents, 52-24.

Schedule Rundown
• Kent State is 5-1 on the season in duals and owns a three-match win streak heading into the dual with Mizzou. In its MAC opener, Kent State beat Buffalo, 28-3.
• The only team to defeat the Golden Flashes this season was Rider on Nov. 7, 18-14.
• In Kent State's five dual wins, it has outscored its opponents, 181-24.

Missouri defeats Kent State

KENT, Ohio – After falling behind 9-0 after the first two matches, Mizzou Wrestling battled back to win seven of the final eight matches to defeat Kent State, 35-12, Sunday in Kent, Ohio. Four #TigerStyle grapplers scored pins in the dual and two posted major decisions as Mizzou won its 33rd consecutive dual.

Redshirt freshman 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.), redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Willie Miklus (Altoona, Iowa), junior 197-pounder J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.), and freshman heavyweight James Romero (Albuquerque, N.M.) all picked up pins, earning six points each for the Tigers. Lewis, Cox, and Romero's pins were in the first period.

Redshirt junior 141-pounder Matt Manley (Perry, Okla.) picked up the first win of the day for Mizzou when he beat Anthony Tutolo by way of a 10-1 major decision. Manley had a big second period, posting a takedown and a near-fall to go up 6-1 after two periods. Redshirt junior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) followed up Manley's win with a 9-3 decision win of his own over Mike DePalma.

After Kent State won the 157 pound match, Lewis faced off against Tyler Buckwalter. Around two minutes into the match, Lewis got Buckwalter in a cradle hold which resulted in a pin at 2:30. The six points gave Mizzou its first lead of the day at 13-12 and was the first of five-in-a-row for the Tigers. Next was redshirt senior 174-pounder Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill.), who beat Mike Vollant with a 14-5 major decision.

Miklus matched up against Cole Baxter in the 184 pound match. Miklus was up 4-1 after the first, and after a four-point near-fall in the second, Miklus got the fall at 3:55. Next up was Cox, who matched up against Jerald Spohn. Spohn was overmatched against the national champion Cox, as he got the pin at 1:02. Romero picked up the fourth pin of the night and the third in a row in the heavyweight match. His pin came at 0:58 over Devin Nye to cap the score at 35-12.

Mizzou will next wrestle on Jan. 8 when the Tigers host Buffalo for the annual Beauty and the Beast event with gymnastics. The dual will begin at 7 PM CT and will be streamed on the Mizzou Network.
