Talented ten in Class 1 prepare for opening test

The opening week schedule is loaded with great matchups as teams enter their
first regular season action. Take a quick look at games around the Show-Me
State involving teams in our Class 1 pre-season Power Poll.

1)
South Shelby vs Trenton

No. 1 ranked South Shelby drops down to
Class 1 and into the top position in the rankings.

2) Valle
Catholic @ Principia

No. 2 ranked Valle ventures North on I-55 to
battle Principia in a Saturday afternoon contest.

3) Orrick vs
Mid-Buchanan

David Rapp is rebuilding with a young squad at
Mid-Buchanan high following a playoff season. The Bearcats still have
great talent and are ready to start a new winning streak.

4)
South Harrison vs Plattsburg

The Bulldogs enter with a lofty No. 4
ranking and a challenge from Plattsburg from the KCI conference. The
Tigers have just 3 starters returning and will have their hands full with the
Bulldogs who drop down to Class 1 and rise into the rankings.

5)
Wellington Napoleon @ Lathrop

Wellington is loaded and ready for
this road contest at Lathrop. A season ago the Tigers defeated Lathrop 28-14.


6) Thayer @ Salem
The Thayer Bobcats return to the South
Central Assiation and receive several votes from coaches as the pre-season
favorite in the league. The Bobcats will be challenged by Salem (Class 3)
on the opening week with a road test.

7) Miller @ Greenfield

Has the potential to be the most competive week one game among power poll teams.
A season ago Greenfield earned a 20-18 victory. This season Miller enters
ranked No. 7, Greenfield is led by new head coach Tom Ellis who moves over from
East Newton.

8) Concordia @ Higginsville
The Orioles
could have their hands full with a talented Husker squad that returns 8 starters
on both offense and defense.




The Orioles return a veteran lineup from their 8-4 playoff
team giving head coach John Cox and Concordia fans reason for optimism.
"We have most of our skill kids returning, but lost some very good
lineman", commented Cox.


9) Pierce City @ Sarcoxie




No. 9 ranked Pierce City visits Sarcoxie in the debut of new head coach Luke
Rader. Mac Whitehead making his debut in Pierce City returns an
experienced group Senior TE/DE Chance Chapman(6-2 190),
senior WR/DB Mitchell Gibson(6-2 170), and senior RB/LB
Cody Cox(5-9 185) return following solid seasons.
Other Eagles to watch include Senior OL/DL William Gilliam(5-10 300),
Senior OL/DL Aaron Crouch(6-0 240), and senior WR/DB Jordan Saffer(5-8
140).

10) Tipton @ Southern Boone




A Mid-Mo Conference game a season ago, Tipton has moved to the Kaysinger
Conference lowering the significance of this opener. Roger VanDeZande has the
Eagles headed in the right direction in his second season.
