Looks like the top football is played in the Southwest area of the state. Joplin finished as Class 6 runner up and then you have Carthage, Webb City, Cassville and Ava playing for titles this weekend. St. Louis only has left besides state champion DeSmet is Lutheran North. Southeast Missouri has Valle and Jackson left. KC, I will give them Odessa and Platte County. Lincoln I will say is from Central Missouri.

I can speak for the St. Louis area, as the only teams that have won and has a chance to win are our Private Schools who are like Select teams, as they get players from all over STL area. That is why the public schools in St. Louis and even St. Charles are at a great disadvantage, as they are going up against All-Star teams. Now, I can go either way on this topic, as some of our public schools in STL fail our kids academically, so I know these kids are in a better place for both education and sports. But I think we have reached a point where we need to go to separate Public and Private schools for the sports. I would have loved to see a Private school football tournament where a Lutheran North would have played CBC and DeSmet to see where they stack up. You could place all Private and Charter Schools into one bracket (Any school where the students are not bound by specific border boundaries for attendance) and place all true public schools into five classes, starting with 64 teams in the largest class and having the smallest class as the catch all.

I know we get tired of all of these Public vs Private school debates, but a team like Lutheran North, who could possibly be the best team in the STL area besides East St. Louis who resides on the Illinois side of the river, playing for the Class 2 title is somewhat of a joke. And to even think that Cardinal Ritter, who actually beat Lutheran North is also in Class 2 (no Ritter is another entire topic), there is something wrong with the playoff system. The new system coming will not solve the problem.

And to make myself sound crazy, I will be rooting for North to win this weekend as I support the STL teams, but I do not think it is right.

I think if the New system DIDNT have a Cap on it in then it would actually solve the Problem. But its a 2 class Cap.

Lutheran North would at best be moved to class 3 when Class 4/5 would be the actual class to put Trinity, Lutheran North, and CR in. Watching those teams battle with Ladue/Webb would be the proper competition.

Some years like Trinity 2018 couldve played Class 6 and then LN and Ritter this year but Most years this is not the case.

My only argument is not all privates are "recruiting for football". A ton of privates don't make it past week 1 or 2 of district play. the admission's department of JBS and MICDS does not care if the kid plays football, they have a whole litany of things the kid needs to do (SSAT test (which none of us would do well on), interview, parent interviews etc) before even being considered for the school, same with Priory and SLUH.

And yes that is true as well. I often cite the private schools here in Joplin as an example. They are not known for athletics. They do participate in a few sports but not at an incredibly high level and none play football. If people have an athlete they want to position for success they move into Webb City's district.

The Schools themselves arent doing any of that stuff, even at the ones we're all sure is doing that. its the Coaches.
The schools arent disallowing it but the administrators at Catholic schools arent following the Jr Football Leagues in St Louis projecting out which 14 year old can develop into a D1 recruit.
Plus who would really even turn down a kid good at football just because?
I dont see a solution or an End to this "problem"

AD's, principals, and supers are all active participants. The only question that's left is, "Is it wrong?" They are coming to understand branding and the impact good football has on branding their schools and their districts. Play good football, attract good families. Good families equal good students. Good students equal good school. Good school attracts more good families.

I know this is something you all would like to think, but those Higher Ups are old and white, probably never been to a Jr Football Game at Matthew Dickey Boys & Girls Club in St Louis.

They are not responsible for bringing in those kids at all. This just admit them if they meet their enrollment guidelines which outside of MICDS are not very strict. St Louis area public schools are notoriously not the best, private schools are much better.

Just put all private schools in two classes, let them play whomever wants to play them in the regular season and then they have their own playoffs. To heck with them

Naive. Of course the coaches and their circle of allies are doing the leg work. But even in the public schools the leaders are in full support and hungry for more. To not believe or understand, demonstrates distance from the process and naivety. Public or private, this is now the norm; not the exception.

Coaches don’t need to go search for kids. EVERYONE knows CBC, Lutheran North, DeSmet and now Trinity, Ritter, St. Mary’s etc have dominant programs. ALL the kids see it growing up and they want to be a part of those programs and play for those coaches. Let’s not pretend families don’t move to specific public school districts without being “recruited” by coaches.

I’d LOVE for private schools to be in a separate division. It wouldn’t stop public school fans from bitching, but it’d be a way for them to move onto new excuses for when their seasons end. Class 2 and 3 fans are THE worst offenders. Judging from they crying, you’d think private schools have won 7 consecutive State Championships, instead of it being Lamar.

The whole thing is a sham, anybody with any degree of intellect knows this. The public's just need to live with it til it changes, and the privates should just recognize it and feel fortunate they are on the good side of it. That said, if a few privates assemble all star teams and they STILL don't consistently win titles, then they have problems other than talent, and that's on them. It doesn't make it NOT a sham.

Stop crying and complaining about the same thing over and over again. Having two MORE state Championship games does not solve the problem. The problem is that Missouri has so many classes to begin with that everyone feels entitled to have a chance for a State Championship based on their school size.

Why is a Conference or District Championship not enough? A Class 1- 4 school who can't beat Desmet doesn't even earn the right to be called State Champions as there should be ONLY ONE!

Maybe there could/should be a Class Championship where you could separate Public & Private. But a State Championship team should be the BEST TEAM IN THE STATE...regardless of size, private status etc. Period.

Stop crying about more consolation and participation awards.

Joplin lost to DeSmet because of turnovers. They had more than enough talent to hang with them and Westmoreland looked like the best player on the field. Maybe we should let LN actually win a title before saying they to play in a higher class. This is their first championship game appearance in quite a while. There are good private and public school programs. Most years, the good publics more than hold their own against private schools.
