Stanford had a group called the Stanford Internet Observatory that provided real-time analysis on viral online falsehoods from all sides. From election disinformation to lies about wars, vaccines, etc.

But it has struggled amid attacks, including lawsuits from conservative politicians and activists. The lawyer fees and information gathering time requirements from defending themselves have driven them to eliminate staff to the point of extinction.

There is little to no hope for citizens to get to the truth online.
