Class 5 CBC is a favorite to be a final four team this year because of the bracket set up. Class 4 St. Mary's put an ole Fashion " Butt Kicking ' on CBC last night @ SLUH. The Dragons were up by 15 @ the end of the 3rd quarter and won by 9 points.

St. Mary's is considered one of the top defensive team in St. Louis and some are giving the edge to the Dragons in a head to head match up with the defending class 4 state champions, Vashon.

Coach Kelvin Lee's St. Mary's Dragon's returns their top 8 players for 2018 and wants to play anyone who will schedule his team for next season. Kelvin enjoys beating up on the " Metro Catholic league Teams " like SLUH, CBC, DeSmet and hopes to get in the ring with Chaminade next season.

i'm not sure 9 point win is a butt kicking, but you are probably right. Polls are just polls. Interesting they have all of their guns back next year...surely none of them would transfer to chaminade?

You bring up an interesting point about transfers. Rumor has Yuri Collins 5'11" enrolled @ Chaminade as an 8th grader but enrolled @ St. Mary's as a freshman and appears to be one of the top varsity guards in St. Louis as a 10th grader.

St. Mary's coach Kelvin Lee has a keen eye for talent in the lower grades. Kelvin was an asst coach @ CBC and was responsible for the enrollment of Larry Hughes and Justin Tatum which resulted in a large school championship for CBC. Kevin Lee was the coach on record when Jason Tatum ( Duke ), Brad Beal ( NBA )and Tyler Cook ( Iowa ) enrolled @ Chaminade.

The coaches below can talk with students before enrolling in high school. All legal. If all five coaches listed below are talking with the same student---Who has the best odds for the kid to enroll @ their high school. I believe the best odds are on Kelvin Lee.

1. Frank Bennett----Chaminade
2. Justin Tatum------CBC
3. Tony Irons---------Vashon
4. Erwin Claggett--SLUH
5. Kelvin Lee--------St. Mary's

How can any of these schools openly recruit and it be ok? Especially at the lone public school, Vashon. Just curious..,

Rocket, I'm not saying it's right but here's how it's not recruiting according to the MSHSAA.

Rocket, I plan on being @ the Sikeston-Farming game tonight. I will try to explain why it's not recruiting with you tonight.

I just saw your post now, metro.

Can you explain how it's not "recruiting?" I'm genuinely curious....

Rocket and others. Before I try to explain the recruiting issues, I believe it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better for our public schools. One of my administrative friends called me after returning home from Farmington last night. His concern was our new governor will change the way we educate kids in Missouri. We believe the " Voucher " system will be used to help pay tuition for " Private School." More charter schools will be created. Charter schools are public schools but privately managed. If this change takes place, more public school kids will enroll in private schools which means more talent for the privates.

Here goes on the recruiting issues. Most large school districts start paying dues to the MSHSAA starting in the 9th grade. Most schools outside of our large metropolitan areas are member of MSHSAA starting in the 7th grade and have junior high programs. It is my understanding once a student enrolls in a school that pays MSHSAA dues, it's " Hands Off " for our private school recruiters.

In St. Louis and Kansas City, most of our schools do not have athletic programs for 7th and 8th graders ( Not a member of MSHSAA ) therefore the " Private School " recruiter can recruit students ( I did not say athletes ) before enrolling in the 9th grade. We must remember all private school students live in public school districts and pay taxes to the district they live in.

It is my understanding, private high schools like Cape Notre Dame and Saxony Lutheran can talk with future students before the 7th grade and be legal but in St. Louis private school recruiter can talk with students before enrolling in the 9th grade. An example of this--C. Gordon lives in the Webster district and attended school from the first grade thru the 8th grade. C Gordon was going to enroll @ Webster in the 9th grade but changed his mind a week or so before school started and enrolled @ Vianney.

We can like the rules or not like the rules but the privates schools could not exist without enrolling students from public school districts.

Your right Metro they can't exits without enrolling students from public schools , but these schools are enrolling students for athletic gain and athletic gain only and that's truly an unfair advantage and the public school coaches and administrators must stand together to change this

Train, You will never get the MSHSAA to convict a private school for enrolling students for athletic reason. The private school will bring in hundreds of students they recruited that were not athletes. The privates will say " We recruit students not athletes.

Vashon is a public schools with a limit number of students who can attend Vashon. As I understand it, Any students living in the St. Louis city can enroll @ Vashon if they have an opening after enrolling students in Vashon's assigned district. I believe the Vashon principal makes the decision on who are admitted @ a crowded Vashon high school. I will give the principal the benefit of the doubt and say he will not favor athletes over other students.

Train, let me say something in regard to the Sikeston area. Rumors has Sikeston players who are cut from the Sikeston team enrolling @ Scott County Central without moving. I have gotta believe these rumors are false because the AD or Principal @ Sikeston must sigh a form from the MSHSAA stating the student or students in question are in good standing @ Sikeston and no recruiting was involved before the move. I'm guessing if the Sikeston AD, Principal or the Vashon principal know of any violations, they would correct the form sent to the MSHSAA.

Train, Teachers, coaches, AD's and fans across Missouri are in the " Kid Business " and would want no part of anything that would give their team an advantage.

It is recruiting period. The sad part is that most of all those kids do not pay a dime to attend school at any of the private schools. They are reaching well beyond the St. Louis area because kids from surrounding areas are landing at private schools.

I don’t have a single problem with private schools recruiting kids in…BUT, they need to be competing against others just like them…It’s completely unfair for Jackson High School and others to have to try and beat Chaminade in a playoff game…there is no way…It’s not a level playing field. Not by any stretch of anybody’s imagination. Same can be said for Vashon and their Class 4 potential opponents…In no way should a fellow public Class 4 school have to contend with a school that can draw from an entire city’s population…I was listening to the SEMO game last night, “Brandon Jackson entering the game for SIU-E. He’s from nearby East St. Louis, Illinois and attended Missouri Class 3 power, Cardinal Ritter last year, where he averaged…..etc”….i mean, really? Bottom line, if you don’t have district/school district boundaries, you should be put in a separate classification against others that have no boundaries. End of story. We can vote within MSHSAA until the cows come home, but those affected are far less than those that are affected, so a yes/no vote will never win out. For every school that has to deal with this problem, you have 20 schools that could care less because they are ousted in district play early on and never see the private schools and the Vashon type schools so it's of no concern to them.
