lets see teams try to rip each other heads off , celebrate in each others faces and
talk trash to each other then immediately after the game when emotions are the highest
I am suppose to shake the guys hand that tried to beat my brains in doesn't make since. Losing
team get off the field winning team enjoy your victory but all this fake hand shakes is a little
much, I know people say it shows sportsmanship no it doesn't how you act during the game is
what shows sportsmanship and respect. It is like in soccer players go shake official hands the very
guys they were yelling at during the game.Or before high school games players shake the officials
hand just play the game. I officiated a lot of high school ball I never wanted a player or coach shaking
my hand right before they where getting ready to question every call. Just play the game hard , be a good sport and head to the locker room.

For real...

I'm guessing you really dislike the way fighters act after a boxing match or a MMA fight.

no, more crap happens with that after the game handshake than anything else, I remember a Chilli kid hit a Maryville kid over the head with his helmet in the after game handshake, seen fights break out in many after game hand shakes

it happened before I got there but always heard stories of it, maybe kchi can give more details, if I remember the hiway patrol were waiting for the kid when the bus arrived at chilli

Ask yourself... what is the TRUE purpose of high school athletics? The REAL answer to that question should guide the actions of coaches, the officials, players, parents, HS athletic administrators, etc. If you lose sight of that purpose, then it becomes easy to question the rationale behind a post-game handshake. That part is for respect... respect for the game & respect for the other team. Without respect for the competition, games easily lose their integrity and teams would be stuck playing... themselves, with no understanding of how good they are against other teams, no gauge of their level of improvement, and no understanding of their individual character and their team cohesion.
Sadly, our sports culture is losing sight of the true purpose of sports at the high school and youth levels.

It was not a Maryville kid, and it did not occur in a Chillicothe - Maryville game. The incident occurred in a playoff game in CLINTON against Clinton in a quarterfinal game on Nov 14 1988 in a game that was won 41-7 by Chillicothe. The incident was dealt with by law enforcement in CLINTON and CHillicothe school administration at the time. I can provide an on line link to the Chillicothe newspaper article about the incident if you wish.
If you are going to comment about Chillicothe, I respectfully ask you get the facts straight. Thank you.

I couldn't disagree more. It is important for the kids to suck it up and not be a whining millennials after the game. It is a great show of respect for your opponents. Mostly now days kids exchange twitter information and become friends after the game. However I could see if you were like nwalls and always on the loosing side of handshakes how you might not like it.

LOL at this post... You can compete at a high level and shake hands and show respect after the game. Learn how to lose, because somewhere in life you will have to understand and deal with it.

I do not feel it hypocritical at all to shake hands after a game. To feel that way would be saying that you cannot play a game and still be respectful to one another. It is all about respect win or lose. I attended a game this year, Maryville against Miller Career. I have attended football games for 50 years and NEVER have I attended a game that the National Anthem was not played until that day. I was very angry about that and hope that the bodies that govern such actions correct that situation. That to me was hypocrisy for there is no greater threat to our freedom and justice than a lack of gratitude to those who provide it.

If we should win
let it be by the code
with faith and honor held high

If we should lose
let us stand by the road
and cheer as the victors go by

Shaking hands and showing respect after giving your best effort, win or lose, is an important skill. Games are not wars. We are not trying to kill anyone. The other team is not an enemy to freedom. We are playing a game, we are competing and we are giving our best effort. Would praying for protection for both teams before a game be hypocritical also?

I can remember a game when two assistant coaches almost came to blows after going through the line ---- the thing I don't like about the handshake line after the game is that everyone- I mean everyone- gets in line. I'm fist bumping starters, injured reserve, subs, JH coaches, managers, stat keepers, watergirls, ballboys, student photographers...

If you are playing Clemson you evidently will need some protection!

It's a meaningless waste of time. Like most traditions. You just go through the motions because you are "supposed to". You are already doing your job if you compete with great intensity without losing your composure. Any pomp and circumstance stuff needs to go away. Senior night, homecoming coronation, it's all traditional crap that needs to disappear.

You can also throw out post season individual awards for football. That is the essence of what the sport is NOT about. All conference? Who cares? Is that why we play? Post season banquets? MVP awards?
Ax them.

You must not have been on a very good team. Or at the very least weren't any good yourself. Don't hate the playa!

Honestly, I thought this was a joke, at first. I am in full agreement on the showboating crap. I don't like it when I see kids doing the "feed me" crap and over celebrating for, basically doing what they are coached to do. I do, however, believe that a kid needs to learn that, once the final whistle blows, you congratulate your opponent and honor the game by shaking hands. I also believe that ONLY the winner gets a trophy and that kids need to be taught, at an early age, that if you want the trophy, you have to work for it.

Does there have to be a trophy?
What about the intrinsic reward of playing football, being part of a team, learning to show up every day and doing your best because other people are counting on you?
Does anyone ever actually run at break neck speed to cover a kickoff because they want a trophy? Celebrating a victory or championship with your teammates is the greatest reward. It can't be dropped or broken. It doesn't have to be dusted by the custodial staff. People who gripe about everyone getting a trophy, who cares? It shouldn't be about getting trophies.

Don't know about anyone else but when I go to a basketball tournament for my grandkids, I enjoy looking through the trophy cases of the schools that I am in. It's like a history lesson in itself! Especially an older school who's display cases are huge and very full! It is not so much for the kids that won the awards as it is for the kids that will follow them. You do away with all of the traditions, might as well do away with all the games.

I was just at a game two weeks ago and took a picture of a trophy from 1971 for a team that knocked my brothers team out of the playoffs and I texted it to him to open old wounds. Bahahahahahahaha.

Actually, I was referring to the "trophy" metaphorically. It was really aimed at the "everyone gets a ribbon" mindset.
