Separate Class/Districts for Girls

For those of you that don't understand. The bootheel has districts where there are only 2 or 3 teams. Not every bootheel school has girl basketball. A lot play volleyball. We are not talking roster size. It's not right that you only have to win one or two games to win your district. My thinking is if the team is not very good they will get knocked out on the way to the final 4.

What teams play girls basketball only? Just a few privates maybe.
No, that is not what I meant. I mean that they would do the classification as if girls basketball is a completely different sport from boys basketball.

Their school's enrollment numbers won't change and that's what has always determined which class you're in, at least in public schools.

If they actually made boys and girls basketball separate from each other to even out the districts on the girls side you would see a large shift in the enrollment breaks in the lower classes. You would have to fill a bunch down in class 1 which would in turn shift the enrollment break for class 2 and so on. Would make it tougher for class 1 as you would see schools like Greenfield, Weaubleau, Oran etc. back down to class 1 and Mid-Buch, Skyline, Milan back to class 2 on the girls side. They would stay where they are now on the boys side though.

So the girls would be actually playing the classification they belong in?

Sign me up.

That current rule is that they base the classes on the number of boys schools. And then just slot the girls teams in the classes based on the same enrollment splits. The proposed rule is to treat Girls basketball as a separate sport when determining classes. It has nothing to do with changing enrollment numbers.

How would this change anything for public schools? Aren't the numbers the same?

If they completely separate boys and girls classes it would change the cutoffs and shuffle some teams on the border down a class. They would fill some of the districts that only have 2-3 girls teams in class 1 back to normal size. So your schools that are close to the line between classes may have a boys team in class 2, but a girls team in class 1 or boys in 3 and girls in 2 etc.

It could change some of those borderline schools and what class they play in. If you have less girl programs, then that could change where you cut each class. Maybe you take the biggest 60 schools in class 6 instead of the biggest 64 on the boys side, etc.

They should classify everyone based off the girls numbers.

Let the boys enjoy some 14 team districts

Edit: Wonder if this could be a title 9 issue.

Because there are a different number of schools. The cutoff is not a pre-determined number. It is based on how many schools are in that sport and a formula set by MSHAA. If there are fewer girl schools playing basketball and their classes are determined separately, then the there will be some Boys teams in one class and Girls in another class (even though they have the same enrollment).
