The main reason I retired when I did was because of kids like the one everybody is saying was mistreated and I won't argue the merits of throwing a kid to the floor and manhandling her, but will add this. There are times where you just want to smack some of these kids. They can drop Fbombs, tell you to go to hell, and refuse to do anything you ask and your hands are tied as a teacher. Not sure what went on in that classroom. but I have been in classrooms long enough to know that no one seemed to come to the girls defense. The teacher just stood there and the other students did nothing to defend the girl. Very unusual that other students did nothing while this went on. I would guess the girl was pushing every button she could and the SRO guy lost it. That should not happen on the other side is that these kids see adults treat each other with so little respect I guess this is going to become the norm. Just watch our leaders and total lack of respect for each other.

According to CNN, there was another girl arrested in the room for confronting the officer about tossing the girl across the room.

The boy on his computer looked scared to me.

Middle school boys are the worst human beings in the world. Especially when they know they can cry in the office and get little or no punishment. Just sayin.

Still not an excuse for physically assaulting a child. Somehow most of you manage never to do it to your students.

not in the classroom on a regular basis so I don't have comments beyond that. I'm sure she did something to get the cop there but if he's not calm enough to handle that situation he doesn't belong in a school or probably in a uniform for that matter

Idk I have seen VB walking behind his class with a softball bat. :). The other girl was on CNN this evening and said that officer is huge and is a scary individual.

I agree NM. I'm just saying that anyone who thinks teachers are over paid have no idea what they are talking about. It will be interesting to see what this girl said and did to evoke such an action. If it was nothing more than refusing to get up then the SRO guy is and should be done, but I'm guessing by the reaction of the rest of the students in that class she was pushing her luck.

According to girl 2, girl 1 is extremely quiet and had her cell phone out in class. The teacher asked for it and the girl wouldn't give it up so he told her to go to the office and she wouldn't. Then an administrator came down and she wouldn't leave so the officer kicked her ass and showed her what it be like.

Call me crazy, I'm not going to put a lot of stock into what a middle school girl said about an intense situation. Sometimes the facts.. are... a little... uh... Well they lie. Like, a lot.

Maybe I'll be way off on this instance and both of these little girls are angels as they claim. But, if history has taught me anything, Middle School females are the devil. Lol.

Ol'VB was scary back in the day. I had him fired up at me for an incident while playing basketball in gym class many moons ago. lol

It's starts at home. Not much more to add. If I had ever mouthed off in class or to a teacher, I would get straightened out by parents. I didn't do it. I was terrified of my mom. 6' 230 in high school and I was terrified of my 5'3" 110lb Irish Catholic mother. Never even had to get to my dad.

Yeah but I never put a hand on you or any other student. Although in the late 70s I did paddle some of the little darlings. Darn I missed those days when they made us quit in the early 80s

Here is the thing. If you did whip my ass, do you think my mom or dad would have questioned the school or me? I would have got it twice as bad when I got home for making the principle or teacher take time out of their day to discipline me.

I know this from experience.

You are right sir

It's the touchy feely liberal approach to discipline and correction that has caused this yet you still support liberal policies.

You know there is no evidence that corporal punishment improves behavior long term over other methods, right? There is ample evidence from scientific studies that it is counter productive as a parenting technique.

This is one of the most studied things about childhood behavior in existence and there is no real evidence supporting spanking or other corporal punishment as being effective at producing better outcomes for kids.

Schools should not be in the business of physically disciplining kids.

There are other methods that work better at imposing discipline

No question it is ridiculous the lack of trust a lot of parents have in teachers to give them honest counsel though.

Seriously ???? If my dad looked at me crossways, I would piss my pants. The reason, I knew he would beat my a$$ like a rented mule. That taught me to respect authority.

Tell me what methods work better at imposing discipline ?

I call BS..... That's one reason this country has gone to sh!t, let the kids be disrespectful . I agree with you on a lot of things NM, but you are wrong on this one. And I don't care what scientific studies say, they are wrong.

Point to all the scientific studies you want. Are children better behaved now, or 50 years ago ?

I never said it was a good tool NM just said I missed it.

Punctuation is important vb,

Did you say " I never said it was a good tool, NM just said I missed it"

Or. "I never said it was a good tool NM, just said I missed it"

Thanks Aggie I seem to do that a lot when I'm drinking beer and watching football

You're setting up a false choice. The choice isn't raising respectful or disrespectful children, it is choosing to use other methods that work better at raising respectful kids.

beating kids actually lowers academic performance and increases their aggression towards others. People spank because it's what they know not because it makes sense to do so in the long run. It's a short run tactic with long term negative effects.

Beating a kid is different than spanking a kid. No offense Rumor, but you throw out a lot of stats that cannot actually be proven. I'm sure there are studies that say you're right, but it's not actually possible to prove that a kid being spanked will cause them to be terrible people.

My cousins were spoiled beyond belief, lived in a huge house off Wildhorse Creek Rd. etc. They are complete dip****s. They were never spanked as kids.

So my personal study says not spanking a child causes them to grow up to be dip****s.

You don't have to spank kids, to say what you mean, and mean what you say. If you have a set of rules, and you follow them, you have structure. If you have support from the administration, when the parents come in to complain, you have a disciplined school. If the parents force the admin, to cower, then the school lacks discipline and the classroom will lack discipline. I have seen a lot of good teachers have struggles because they were forced to back down in situations and then they lose a little bit of control.

If kids think that where they are is worse than the another option they will act up. If they think like going to the principal because he gives them candy, you have a problem. If they don't want to go there, because he will make them stay on a Friday night, or sit in a room all day staring at the walls, then you will have a disciplined school.

What do you do when the student refuses to get up out of his/her chair to go to the principles office though? Completely disrespecting authority has to be dealt with you cant just let a student get away with laughing at you.

Like the original student? If an administrator comes down and they won't go with them, then you call the cops just like they did at this school, they had one on campus. I don't think anyone did anything wrong in that instance until the cop did what he did. If a student refuses to leave when the cop asks them to leave then they will be arrested.

But when you tell them to leave you don't back down. If they refuse you stop until they are gone, and make sure the situation is resolved. If you let them stay you lose credibility.

Spanking kids makes parents feel better. It doesn't actually makes the kids any better.

Cow, how can you be so wrong,

Spanking makes the parents feel terrible, but makes the child a better person.

I can sure tell your a youngster.

In what way are they better? It doesn't promote better behavior in the long run relative to other methods.

Na, spanking is an expression of anger. Studies have shown that spanking is not an effective form of punishment.

Parents dont have to be angry when they tan their kids. I can assure you the principle of my school was not angry when he gave me 3 swats, but guess what, I learned to adjust my BEHAVIOR so I would not go to see him again.

With all due respect, youngster, your studies are being proven wrong, everyday.

Not my studies. Studies by real life psychologists, who are experts in the field.

Generally, anecdotal evidence is the worst evidence.
