I coached football for 28 years in St. Charles area and to see how few kids are playing football in so
many of the schools is sad. I follow it very close look at rosters and we have at least 30 schools
up here that play no lower-level football and have less than 30 kids in their entire program.
Saw a class 4 team tonight dress 18 players. Class 5 school with less than 25. Private schools
are fine since they can recruit so they will always have enough players.
I see a day up here where only class 2 and 3 schools that play football will be private schools. Almost all of the ranked schools up here are private schools.
Back in the day small public schools up here could compete and have good numbers. There is not one good class
2 or class 3 public schools in a 50-mile radius of St. Charles. Soccer is king and mothers don't want their sons playing
football up here. You go to any soccer complex up here their fields are full every night and all day on weekends.

The CTE stuff is way overblown - especially at the high school level (incidence is virtually nonexistent), but it has scared many moms off from football. Sad.

yes, it has. Football is a great teacher of life lessons. I admire the public school I watched online all 11 kids played both ways and did all special teams. They played a private school and it was 42 to 0 before you could blink your eyes. To the credit of the private school coach, he played his JV all the second half. If the public school finishes the season I will be shocked. The kids will get tired of getting beat up every game with no breaks.

Bowling Green is a class 2 school within 50 miles of St. Charles and they are pretty dang good.

it is sad. i wish mshsaa drop the 150 enrollment for 8-man and make it 24 players or less for all team in al 6 Classes. 8-Man could add another class or classes. i seen it with my eyes tonight. Van-Far have around 22 players and they're were about 5 or 6 dress out

Kid's don't want to put in the offseason work. If they could just show up the first day of practice in August, there would be bigger rosters.
That was the way it used to be before the advent of off season strength and conditioning requirements. The football wasn't as accomplished and you didn't see as many violent collisions but the kids had more fun. IMHO

True, but we also had two weeks of 2-a-Days which aren’t allowed anymore.

Don't forget about the offseason commitment if you play more than one sport. Heck the entire month of June is full of basketball shootouts and the fall is filled with baseball tournaments. Neither one of those sports require the kids to wear shoulder pads and helmets in the lovely Missouri summer heat. Plus many coaches push the kids to specialize in one sport.

I thought it this thread the other night while sitting in traffic leaving the Carthage game. There were SO many fans, students, players at that event. And this seems kind of normal around here. Not all of the COC schools travel in big numbers but all the ones I've been to, even less successful programs like Neosho, Republic, Branson still typically have large home crowds.

St Louis is just a weird animal. It's not really like the rest of the state so it only makes sense that this area would favor soccer. And the weird fact that so many residents reject the public schools, which are consistently ranked as the best in the state in favor of expensive private schools, I guess that is just a way to maintain status. Again, that is relatively unique to the STL area even compared to Kansas City.

Sometimes I think of St Louis as kind of the 'texas' or 'california' of Missouri. It's doesn't really need or relate to the rest of the state, and given it's way would probably rather just be on it's own.

Maybe this year, but 22-30 over the last 5 years is below average
I thought we were just talking about this year? That 1-9 season 5 years ago really negatively skews their most recent 5-year average.

Over the long haul they are above average and finished 2nd in Class 3 back in 2010.

Plus...the current Head Coach is only in his 2nd year and he really has them going.

Not claiming they will win state...but it will take a really good team to beat them this year.

Fairly good teams across class 2. Depending on district and circumstances a lot of games will be fun for these teams.
