I would like someone to help me learn more about the rankings that are put out on mosports
Perhaps I should be on this committee
They are always way off, invalid polls and with several teams like oran , valley catholic and Springfield catholic being accurate
But I don't understand how teams like hallsville and Fatima and other schools never get any points for rankings
And always end up playing further in post season than teams such as forsyth, cuba, jefferson city.
then teams like rock bridge who is not even mentioned but yet is playing in a final four this week
Blair oaks who is ranked all season long but don't even get out of their own district?
Hallsville did not get any respect this whole year and play in the elite 8 for class 3
Sure palmyra is ok and had a great year . But who do they play? Nobody
Pembroke hill and westminster christian and CBC obviously who have several potential draft picks on the team?
Teams like strafford who have a silly schedule that is tough is understandable
Then u got a team and tuscumbia who is team that plays no body but gets a few votes ?

Is strength of schedule considered?
Are the people making votes just bystanders or people that really know talent and the game of baseball?
Is this just a popularity thing between a few coaches that get together and need publicity and some kind approval?
If so, this is and will never be a valid poll because u will have coaches that will never vote for some teams that deserve it .... Simply because they do not like one another.

"Tuscumbia who plays nobody"....I'm not sure what you are smoking but if you consider Fatima (final four), Linn twice (final four), South Callaway (State Champion two years ago), Russellville, Eldon (class 4 district champion), New Franklin (final four), Eugene, Northwest (District Champion), Green Ridge and New Bloomfield to be nobodies then you my friend need to think before you speak and do a little research. Hell in fact I would consider our strength of schedule as tough as anybody's so before you come on here talking trash about other people do your research before you make statements that are inaccurate. That line alone would be enough in my book to say you probably wouldn't be needed on any state ranking committee.

Pre-season polls are based on what teams are EXPECTED to do. As the season goes on the polls are based more on what teams HAVE done. Teams that do well in the playoffs will be ranked in the FINAL poll. The guys who do the polls put a lot of time and effort (without pay) into the process and should be praised and thanked rather than trashed.

Just for the record: Three of the top four teams in the Class 5 pre-season poll are in the Final Four. The fourth team in the Final Four was ranked ninth pre-season.

Rankings are done by committee. I believe each district has a representative who is responsible for the vote. They can recommend teams in their district to other committee members. Records, potential, head-to-head, run differential, everything can be considered but it's up to each classification to vote how they think things should be.

Every year you'll see teams that could be ranked who aren't and shouldn't be who are ranked. But it's the coaches who are representatives who are voting based on who they think should be ranked.

Personally, I think Missouri needs a points system. This system should be for playoffs and rankings.

Whatever the process is , it's wrong and needs to be changed for many reasons.
U cannot have coaches do the votes for many reasons
Coaches are not gonna vote accurately when a team comes in and beats them badly with their 3rd best pitcher
Especially when they are in the same district and it comes to seeding at the time of post season
Most coaches are honest
However when u look at some of these schedules that these kids play
And they are 23-2 it's absolutely silly to see them not even get out of districts
Simply because their schedule strength is sooooo.... Very weak
And yet schools that are 3A who play all class 4 and 5 schools and end up 16-5
Don't get any votes is absolutely crazy to me
It's not all about record like people think it is.

Question for Scout

Are you a high school coach?

If you are, I recommend you come to the MHSBCA convention in January and become a part of the process.

If you are not, I recommend you talk to the coach at the high school you are concerned with getting recognition and ask him to come to the MHSBCA convention and become part of the process.

Either way, involvement is the key. Not complaining.

Is the system perfect? No. But coaches are taking their time and asking for information on teams. They send out the info they are given and representatives vote. Class 1 coaches vote for class 1 schools and so on. Finally, the rankings are great recognition for teams, but aren't the final ones that rankings with the most importance. I've had a team in the past that was state ranked all year, and when it came district time, we still got a two seed....I would think rankings shouldn't come into play come district seedings....that is only my opinion.

That's a great question. I do not know the perfect answer. Louisiana has a system that I think I like. They assign 20 points per win, and at the end of the season you get the team's you played wins as points. So if you play a team like Willlard who had 22 wins, and lose, you still get 22 points because you played a good team. If you win, you get 42.

I do not know what they do for district games but we need to put some importance on that as well.

Does anyone know how Oklahoma does their points? Or any other state? Or have a good idea?

The Louisiana system favors teams that play the maximum number of games with few rain outs. Also, beating a class 5 school school with 15 wins would not be as good point-wise as beating a class 3 school with 25 wins.

Word!

Well done, FriscoFan. Tuscumbia plays nobody, yet is in one of the best small school conferences in the state? Makes sense. Even our non-con schedule is tough. I'd like to know where this Scout person is from and play them next year.
