How much should a jv team practice? We had 2 practices over break and have not had practice for 12 days and we have a game on Monday. Is this ok?

We'll find out Monday night. Jackson's JV is not too bad and if they let the big freshman play a couple of quarters of JV they'll be even better.

If you want to build a program, why would you not practice your jv? I know varsity teams pactice and prep for tournament games during CHRISTMAS break--It seems odd to me that coaches would not try to improve their program(practicing the jv squad).

I would guess that many of them dress some JV kids for these tournaments and practice them with the varsity. IF they do that there is probably not many JV kids to have a decent practice. I don't know if that's the case here or not and it might depend on how kids they have overall.

I had practice over break for my all my high school teams. I did not dress any on varsity for the tournament and allowed the 9th/JV to practice when the varsity did. My problem was to many kids and parents made excuses for not coming to practice. I think a lot of coaches are not having younger practice because getting the kids there is a problem. I went an entire week and did not see a single playing freshmen at practice (only one to show up was girl with broken finger). It takes changing the mindset of players and parents to get them to come to practice over breaks.

I agree but if the coach doesn't open the gym it's hard for the kids to get better. I believe that it doesn't matter if you have 15 show up or 5 you still have practice. If the kids aren't in the gym they are just sitting around doing nothing.

Heading to Jackson for the NC game pretty soon. Gotta go in time to get somethin to eat. If you're there Mike look me up. It won't be hard to find me in a place with most folks wearing red or blue & gold.

3R what did you think?
I think they had to handle pressure much better than they did last night to beat St.James. Forbes was the only bright spot for NC last night. She had their first 10 points before Eaton hit a 3 in the 2nd quarter then she scored again for their 15 point total in the 1st half and she missed all 6 of her free throw attempts in the 1st half or it would been much closer at that time. Others finally got going a little offensively but I think she had 28 of their 42 points when she left the game with 2 1/2 minutes to go. They will have to handle it much better to go anywhere in the post season. Number 10 for Jackson, I can't remember her name, was on fire from the 3 point line. If she had shot anywhere near that well at Kennett they would have won that game easily.

That seems to be the problem for the younger teams. I believe some coaches don't understand just how hard it is for some of the younger players to get top the gym. And when both parents work, they are now asking other people for favors of getting them to practice.

Be curious though with many Coaches just how much they practice during this longest sports season of any high school sport? I hearing some Coaches are doing 6 day mandatory practice with open gym on sunday, and we all know what open gym means during the season. I think this if fine for the hard core BBall players, but I do believe it is sucking it out of the players who love to play for the fun of it. Seeing less and less High School Girls Bball teams being able to field 3 teams anymore.

I understand what you are saying but these coaches at most schools jobs ride on wins and loses. So what would you do. I do believe that old fashion hardwork is a trait that can be taught to all kids.

Well we went right back to work and got a 1 hour practice in before our next game tomorrow night. The first practice in 2 weeks and it lasted one hour.

To top that off the JV coach did not come to practice. They got told they need leadership and effort, I am pretty sure that starts at the top. They also got told that they shouldn't have gotten tired they had 2 weeks off. I am sorry to rant but I am frustrated with the situation and don't know what to do!

Leadership does come from the top--Agreed--Getting tired in a game comes from playing hard or not practicing and sitting around for a while. It only takes a couple of off days to lose conditioning. Taking time off is a short practice, not staying home away from the gym.
What to do? $64,000.00 question?

Hope your girl hangs in there and finds a gym to play in when they do not practice.

Hey Mike, I just saw that the NC./ Fmgt game has been rescheduled for 1/19 with 2 quarters of JV at 6:00 followed by varsity. Any idea why only 2 quarters of JV game? Seems odd.

As the "Unofficial Spokesperson" for the JV team, and team bookkeeper you should know they practice with the Varsity every time they practice. So...with having three coaches, if one happens to be gone for reasons you don't know about, practice shouldn't have any issues. As for the lack of practice, 4 of those 12 days you had a tournament where those said JV players were participating in, as well as 4 more days that included 2 Holidays. As someone who knows all three coaches, I know they don't need any help from un-realistic parents living vicariously through their children. The team is 10-3, two of the losses coming against state ranked opponents in class 3 and the other from a very talented class 5 school. They've also won both tournaments they've entered. I guess I'm having a issue finding what you're so bitter about? I feel bad for the coaches, they have a guy that pretends to support them by helping keep the book, then become a internet cowboy and bashes them from behind their back. Well Played..... Keep on passing the Kool-Aid Mike, maybe someone will eventually drink some...

Thanks for the thoughts. But I do not have a daughter on the team and I am not the person you are thinking of. I appreciate the thought that I might be that close to the situation. I agree the varsity team is off to a good start. How is the JV team doing? I do know some kids that play on the team and I hear from them and there parents about the things that happen at games and practice. I did not realize that my comments were that out of line. I just asked how much practice should a team have gotten in.

Does that make you the "Official Spokes Person"?

I beg your pardon, I must be confusing you with someone else, even though I'm not. Anyhow, just some advice from the real "spokesperson" of the JV team:

1) Don't Spread 2nd Hand Information
2) Don't Take Yourself So Seriously, It's Just Basketball

Thanks for the advice.
But I am not the score keeper or have a daughter on that team.

No I have never coached. I guess I probably ought to just keep my mouth shut and stay home and watch American idol.

This is hilarious. Gotta love the passive-aggressive two-faced "supporters."

So you aren't affiliated with the team, and don't have a kid playing? And you are on the internet questioning coaches?

Looooo-ser...

I think this thread started out as a legitimate question, but got personal real quick. My opinion is coaches need to run their programs the way they see fit and let their records speak for themselves. If a coach chooses to only practice a few days during break that's their right as coach. If they struggle because of it, they will have to answer for it. Let coaches coach and as a fan of the program just enjoy watching them play. If your not happy about a coaches performance, you have a right to voice your concerns to the powers that be. As for the "unofficial spokesman" I would suggest if your going to be a part of program as a coach, scorekeeper, or whatever, that you develop some thicker skin. ALL programs face a level of criticism, it's part of coaching, and if you spend your days reading criticism on message boards and letting it get to you, it will effect your ability to coach objectively and effectively.
