Trump does have an incentive to pick someone decent. The senate will rebel. The public pressure will be too high. Although trump showed today he's not thinking rationally about how to manage this sort of pressure. Firing comey increased the attention to these matters whether or not there is any factual basis to investigate there.
It's the same reason it was a disaster to have sessions issue a statement today. You just fired the guy leading an investigation you're recused from.
I think Comey had a deep sense of conscience that Ms. Clinton had acted stupidly and possibly illegally. When he started the investigation he did not know if it would be concluded before the election. Then he hears that Bill Clinton suborned Loretta Lynch to quash the investigation. So, he went public. He then felt bad about influencing the election, so he bent over backward to usurp the authority of the D.O.J. in declaring that Ms. Clinton acted stupidly, but did not have criminal intent. Then he discovered that 600,000 more classified documents were on Hula Abduallah's Iphone, which did double-duty as Anthony Weiner's smut hub for broadcasting images of his gonads around the world.

If Trump wanted to do this in a smoother way:
- He could have just fired him on Jan. 20 saying we did a review and you're not our guy
- Or he could have had a credible appointment lined up already along with a more well thought out communications plan
Sending out a letters where (a) the President pretty clearly inserted some bizarre assertion that the FBI informed him he's not under investigation and (b) the AG who is recused from any Russian investigations fired the person who is overseeing the Russia investigation was not a way to do it. And then sending the critter squad on TV instead of the grownups. KellyAnne is out there because the President unleashed her, not because there is some well thought out purpose to this madness.

To make this simple, President Trump does not need to fire Comey to interfere with any investigations. That is not what motivated his decision. Instead, the President's actions were based on the findings of the Deputy Attorney General and were prompted by Comey's inappropriate actions.
NM judgments are solid gold. He predicted a Hillary landslide.

The stupid way he has done this has incredible potential to blow up in his face.
It's not about Trump acting quickly or not being nice in the sandbox. It's about the fact that it's not remotely well thought out. It's a personal act done in a stupid way that incentivizes a lot of people to either (a) want to get back at him or (b) not trust him.
It would not have been that hard to do this at another time in a more thoughtful way that minimized the negative outcomes.
