How many who like to see neutral sites for all state games once districts are over? Basketball does this and I think it would be cool for football. Plenty of places to play. SEMO, Missouri Southern, Truman, Lindenwood, etc. Just curious.

I have always thought the semifinals needed to be played at a neutral sight somewhere near the midpoint between both schools. Nowadays there are enough good HS facilities with turf fields...it should not be a problem in finding a suitable facility.

This may surprise some...but when I coached in Iowa...during ANY round of the playoffs...if the two schools were more than 100 miles apart...the game was played at a neutral site near the midpoint....and the semifinals were always played in the UNI dome.

How does both teams having to travel save on travel?
Not sure on saving all together but instead of one team traveling hours both teams could travel shorte

I like the idea of having a minimum mileage between schools that would make it mandatory to have a neutral site.

Saving schools, parents, and fans money is not a factor in MSHSAA decision-making. Talk about a top-heavy organization. Bureaucracy at its best.

Some states seed their playoffs 1-64 and you play who you play no matter where it is...could be worse than we have it

I like the minimum mileage thing and believe that frankly it could apply to districts as well. West Plains is way too far from most in their district, which leads to 120+ miles for some trips. Hard to call this a "district" if grouping teams together in close proximity is the goal.

Before someone says that this would be unfair to a higher seed who suddenly loses their chance to host, don't forget that the district point rating system isn't always perfect.

I agree. There are teams that play each other in the regular season and agree to neutral sites. Valle vs Westran is one I know for sure. They played at Borgia. I know that some STL schools have met in Columbia to play KC schools as well.

We JUST got round robin rotation of the "quadrants". Let's play that out a little bit (at least a cycle or two) before making that big a change.

The NEMO schools would get hosed in this type of set-up. There isn't enough suitable host sites in the region. I would be against it, not that it matters.

Truman State, Hannibal, and Monroe City would all be suitable sites with turf fields in Northeast Missouri, no?

Monroe City, while fine for their community, has seating issues for a Class 3 or higher contest, as well as that quirky drain at the corner of one end zone. Macon would be a better option, save the natural grass (which most seasons is in excellent shape), but is still on the small side. Yes, Hannibal and Truman would be suitable, but that's about it. Perhaps CMU at Fayette. I would just prefer letting schools host through the semi's. I know I'm in the minority there, but seeing a packed house 5-10 deep all around the field is awesome. You lose some of that intimacy at the larger venues. I'll hop on my dinosaur and move along.

If you are gonna use neutral sites, it must be all games not just those with far distances apart. If it's my game to host, I don't want the oppositions traveling distance to take it away unless everyone is at a neutral location. It would have to be after district play though to have enough quality sites.

Years ago, there would be double- or triple-headers played at the old Busch Stadium during the playoffs. Kennett played Clayton at Busch. It was a Monday QF. Game was played around 4 pm. Believe Berkeley played that night as well.

While we are at it can we get rid of conferences already in the sport of football? Play your district games 4-10. Start playoffs week 11 with top 4 teams getting out. Play whoever the heck you want weeks 1-3. Also change the catch all every year so there is a balance between schools being at the top of their class, it would create a lot of intriguing match ups from year to year.

Proximity could be described as distant

i.e., based on the 2 schools distant proximity, the game will be at a neutral site

Neutral sites are used in basketball because you bring 4 schools at once together for the games. (Occasionally you will have both boys and girls teams from one school) Volleyball is the same way. Football, baseball, softball, and soccer it makes more sense to use the home team host model. Basically its the best way to maximize revenues.

Why couldnt you have 2 games at 1 venue for the semis. Designate 5 venues and have 2 games at each for the semis

Iowa plays their semi final games at the UNI dome. When I coached in Idaho we played our first playoff game at home, then we would play the rest at ISU. That's because we have to travel east to play the playoff games and the other teams wanted to play in the dome, which was fine with us, nice to be inside that time of the year in Idaho. Idaho was different in that you played the championship game at the college close to you most of the time. If both teams were up North you played at IU, if you were east you played at ISU, if you were West you could play at BSU, but most teams wanted to play inside so they usually went to the other two sites. There was a state championship played at the home field of one of the two teams, they were both west and BSU was in the playoffs that day back when they were 1aa so the high schools agreed to play the game their rather than travel along way to play inside.
