Yep they had it. The false start from the 3 yd line really did them in tho.
Mshsaa only goes back to 1968 but I counted this as Marionvilles 9th semi final appearance! Good tradition for them.
It's dominant. The word is dominant.
Marionville finished 2nd in 97. They were in the playoffs in 76, so that was, at least the quarterfinals. The comet's rb in 76 was Greg McCord. He would dominate games. In 1977, they lost in the quarterfinals to eventual state champ Greenfield, 7 -0. There are more playoff appearances, I'm sure. 9 semifinals though, seems a bit high.

Mville lost to Adrian in the quarterfinals last year, Lost to Thayer in the district championship in 2021, and lost to Windsor in the quarterfinals 2020. This is the first group of comets to make it to the semifinals in a while . Comets are 47-3 since 2020 (this years record included) and have not lost a regular season game since then.

04 semi lost to St. Vincent 20-14
05 state runner up lost to West Platte 35-28

I was just wondering, didnt know abour 68, 76, 96. Midway was consistent for almost 30 yrs.
During my time at the Joplin Globe, got to cover a handful of Marionville games over the years including the 2003 state championship team. Got to know Will Christian that year, enjoyed talking with him and his offense was fun to watch with Nick Smart (all-state in football, basketball and track as a senior) at quarterback.
Won the title in 2003 19-0 over Princeton and allowed only 107 yards of total offense. Marionville's defense was special that season. Princeton averaged 350.5 yards per game rushing that season and had 71 yards on 30 carries in the championship game.
EDIT -- I just realized after I was done typing this it will be 20 years ago next weekend being in St. Louis for championship weekend. Was thinking what a talented kid Nick Smart was, and then I had to stop and realize he's probably 38 now and not a kid anymore. I'm starting to feel really old.

Coach Cavanaugh kept trying to run his big fb, 260 lb son, up the middle most of the game, didnt work too well.
Nick Smart went on to become the all time receptions leader in a single season in Division II at SBU.
