Missouri press release on final Coaches Poll and MAC allocations
NCAA Release
INDIANAPOLIS – The third and final round of the NCAA Coaches' Panel rankings were announced on Thursday by the NCAA with eight from Mizzou Wrestling ranked in the top-33. Among the eight Tiger wrestlers ranked, five were ranked in the top-10, including senior 197-pounder J'den Cox (Columbia, Mo.), who ranked atop his weight class. The rankings will be one tool in determining qualifiers for the 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, held March 16-18 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
After Cox, redshirt senior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes (Mascoutah, Ill.) and redshirt junior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee (Reno, Nev.) in the top-five, checking in at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Daniel Lewis (Blue Springs, Mo.) was ranked at No. 6, while redshirt freshman 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman (Columbia, Mo.) checked in at No. 9.
Also in the rankings was redshirt sophomore 133-pounder John Erneste (Kansas City, Mo.) at No. 13, redshirt junior 125-pounder Barlow McGhee (Rock Island, Ill.) at No. 19 and redshirt freshman 174-pounder Dylan Wisman (Winchester, Va.) at No. 30.
To be eligible for the rankings, wrestlers must be designated a starter, compete in five matches against Division I opponents, and have wrestled in the last 30 days. In addition to the coaches' rankings, wrestlers will be measured by winning percentage and rating percentage index (RPI) in order to earn a spot at the 2017 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
Conference qualifier allocations were also announced on Thursday by the NCAA. The Mid-American Conference will have 37 allocations for its conference tournament, which serves as a qualifier for the NCAA event. The number of allocations per weight class determines how many wrestlers at each weight can automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, based on their placing at the MAC Championships.
Mizzou will return to action at the MAC Championships, which will be held March 4-5 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
