With Lynn coming off surgery and the other health issues we've had...would you be surprised if we kept all of our SPs? I wouldn't.Trade bait?

Aren't offering a contract or aren't extending him a QO? I'd think they'd want the draft pick compensation attached to him if/when he signs elsewhere.No. I wouldn't.
Some of our marginal major league pitching prospects have blown their careers by being hurt every time there is an opportunity to move up.
I heard this morning they aren't offering Moss a contract but I haven't verified that.

Well then, that's interesting. I guess they're afraid he might take it, and at a cool $16M (or whatever it is now), who could blame him?The Cardinals won’t be extending a qualifying offer to first baseman/outfielder Brandon Moss, reports ESPN’s Mark Saxon. Notably, Saxon adds that the lack of a QO “effectively [ends]” Moss’ tenure with the Cardinals, seemingly indicating that the team isn’t currently planning on making a run at re-signing him.
ESPN had reported no qual offer for Moss yesterday IIRCNo. I wouldn't.

Sure seems like there is. Payroll has to be down like $25 M after you get all the arb guys and Garcia signed. No Moss. No Holliday. No Heyward. No Pujols. A whole lot of young guys under control. The Cardinals should have an absolute boatload of money to spend on personnel.
They could trade. They could also sign someone like Fowler. In a really, really horrible FA market. Next year on the other hand...
I believe a trade or Fowler is their best bet with what you suggested. However, I think Fowler may price himself out of what they want to spend for a guy like him. Turner at 3B is intriguing if you package Peralta in a trade to improve elsewhere. As far as the other position players you suggested; respectfully, no thank you. They could trade. They could also sign someone like Fowler.
The FA market for position players isn't as dreadful as the market for pitchers - Encarnacion and Napoli at 1B, Justin Turner at 3B, Fowler CF, Cespedes can opt out, Rasmus, Jose Bautista, etc. Surely a couple of decent defenders out there, too.
The budget is likely to be spent spent on the lineup.
Just thinking (or typing) out loud, but Peralta has played the outfield before...Maybe he becomes this year's Moss and they look for at-bats for him with off days to the regulars as well as pinch hitting duties and depth for potential injuries?I like picking up Garcia. Only thing I can think of the Moss thing is they'll be spending money on a corner player. Hopefully it's Turner. Wouldn't have to trade for Fowler, unless the Cubs pickup the option. Then I can't imagine a trade inside the division. Peralta wouldn't bring a bag of balls with his contract, so might as keep him for insurance for Diaz and Gyorko.
That seems to go against the goal to get a better defense on the field, plus his bat isn't worth playing full time out there.Just thinking (or typing) out loud, but Peralta has played the outfield before...Maybe he becomes this year's Moss and they look for at-bats for him with off days to the regulars as well as pinch hitting duties and depth for potential injuries?
Letting Moss go made me think they want another OF more than they want him.I like picking up Garcia. Only thing I can think of the Moss thing is they'll be spending money on a corner player. He wouldn't be greatly hindering the defense because he wouldn't be a regular. Peralta has had a couple of tough years without a doubt. However, he probably was never really healthy this year and he ran out of gas in the 2nd half in 2015. It's possible he could thrive in a part-time role. That seems to go against the goal to get a better defense on the field, plus his bat isn't worth playing full time out there.
If that's the case, then they still need another OF.He wouldn't be greatly hindering the defense because he wouldn't be a regular. Peralta has had a couple of tough years without a doubt. I don't disagree with that notion. Ideally, they need a regular CF who can hit leadoff for them and move Grichuk to LF. With the right guy, that gives you a plus defensive outfield. If that's the case, then they still need another OF.
