A series of four good articles that should be of interest on this board:

1) FOOTBALL ON THE DEFENSIVE: https://www.columbiamissourian.com/...cle_79f51e2e-d1b5-11e8-acc8-ff4f512994d0.html

A survey by the National Federation of State High School Associations found that high school football participation numbers dropped by 6.6 percent nationally from 2008 to 2017.

The trend is even more dramatic in Missouri.

According to statistics provided by the Missouri State High School Activities Association, football participation numbers have fallen statewide by 15.3 percent since 2009 as of Oct. 2 this year.

The 19,899 total is the first time in more than a decade that the number in Missouri has fallen below 20,000.

Class4 Webb had right at 150 kids out for 9-12 this year. Worse problem was finding equipment for everyone

It’s not a problem with the game

In that same period how many kids have started playing soccer that otherwise would be on the football team???

You can't look at the topic of declining participation through Webb City glasses. The proposition of playing football in Webb City is nothing like playing football just about anywhere else. Families constantly move there just so their kids can grow up and participate in the famous football program. So between that and fact that a winning program is always going to draw out higher participation than an average or losing program - they get larger numbers than many class 6 schools more than twice their size. So when WC starts seeing low numbers you know football in general has a serious problem.

Although I did hear some of my WC friends complaining about the kids that were doing "fall ball" and as their kids and their friends started finding out they wanted to do it too even if it meant quitting football.

Carthage has had successfull programs in both soccer and football with 2 Final Four appearances in football and 3 state championship appearances in soccer in the past 6 years. For what it's worth, they had 80+ out for football and 67 out for soccer this year.

Fundamental changes in the game dealing WITH the injury problem are also driving people away, both players and viewers. By trying to make it safer it's an inferior game to say, even as little as 10 years ago ie: Targeting & PF's. Also, Pass Interference is a joke these days. Still don't know what a catch is by rule. Don't get me started on replay. GET OFF MY LAWN!

Sorry, where was I?

We get our kickers from the SOCCER team! They play at different times of the year! And we've had three in a row, with fifty yard range!

As an aside, just about every school in Georgia fields teams in excess of 75 players! And the number of schools has increased by fifty, since 2010! It's OBVIOUSLY a REGIONAL problem!

What's famous about Webb City, that makes kids want to transfer there? At least in SOUTH Georgia, that isn't an issue! In Rush ProPst's eleven year reign at Colquitt, he has had fewer than fifteen transfers total! Kids want to play for THEIR school, like daddy and granddaddy did!

Soccer ... Ugh.
I wanted to blame soccer for a decline in numbers and interest as well but a few years later??? I'd have to say it's just NOT the reason.
You go to a soccer game (if you have literally NOTHING else in the world to do -- including clean out the garage) and you'll quickly notice that it's just not the same group of kids. You won't be picking kids out and thinking they 'might've played football'. Not many anyway.
