I knew MU was bad, but all players of color quit??

Professors are paid to do research and bring in money, not to teach.
See that's the problem,,,run of the mill places like MU have decided they want to be some great research facility, when in reality they are just a bunch of wannabe Sheldon Coopers.

Need to get rid of all the damn deadwood and overhead and get back to basics education for our kids that us parents can afford

Most universities group their grad students into their group rate for professors and other workers. Mizzou didn't do that. Most universities do not have a problem with grad health insurance, and actually have good benefits. Mizzou has terrible, terrible grad school benefits, and it's a real problem that will hopefully be addressed.

I don't mean to diminish the work of grad students. But lets face it, you are at the bottom of the food chain, like interns, in that field. Similar to every job, benefits and pay sucks. Mine definitely included and we are having trouble finding pilots because of it. However, like you Im sure, I understand that having to suffer through those couple years leads to a better future in the long run. But as long as people are willing to go there (hence you), they will not begin to suffer enough and therefore will not create change. People in my industry are ridiculed for going to the places where they are "bottom feeders" because they are trying to advocate for change. Not by striking or walking out, but by simply not going there. If Mizzou can fill the seats of those grad students, why pay them more? Give them more? Its a business and thats how they look at it.

Funny thing,, not more than 2 years ago Mizzou was being celebrated for the way the university, and the football team handled Michael Sam, coming out as a black, gay, student athlete. Was that a complete fabrication by the media, or have things gone that far downhill since then?

Of course we're on the bottom of the food chain. I'm looking at this from a recruiting standpoint, which is extremely valuable to universities to recruit good grad students. Mizzou isn't competing against other jobs, they're competing against other grad programs, and they're losing. That's my problem. I want Mizzou to be the best school it can be and that means getting the best students, and they can't do that until they pay more and have better benefits.

I love the business analogy (honestly). Let's look at it now. Right now, Mizzou is losing to other competing businesses. Wouldn't you try and fix that by emulating what your competitors do?

But how are they losing? Is the research at MU that far behind say, for example, KU? You claim they have the best facilities in your field for a grad student. So Mizzou isn't losing there from what it sounds like? Like I said, it's a business and if they are filling the seats they need filled with their current benefits package why give more and decrease your profit margin?

I'm not sure how we even got to this topic. FWIW, the video is troubling and that professor in it should be fired for condoning violence against a student (not to mention a minority student).

Why are you so angry?

For my profession, Mizzou had facilities unlike any other college in the world. So for me, the benefits outweighed the downside. For a lot of disciplines, that isn't true, and it's a real problem when trying to get great grad students, who do most of the actual research in universities.

And I did get a job, a very good job. Any other suggestions?
Only the one I stated..... Quit whining!!!!!

President might be gone but all the problems are not going away.

From the bottom of my heart, sincerest thanks for posting this, Frog.

My favorite quote, after this tweet:
"It's typically white media who don't understand the importance of respecting black spaces."

Writer says this in response:
"Of course, god forbid an Asian reporter violate your "black spaces." Which, of course, is actually the center of the quad on a university campus. I know this may shock y'all, but it's almost like these protesters don't understand how the Constitution works. And who could have foreseen that the protest against racism would Tweet racist things? Uh, everyone."

GOD HELP US! We are so screwed in this country...

If the President of the school mishandled anything dealing with a race issue he should be removed...period. He gets paid way to much to not be able to manage this. But this is not the way for the players to react that play football in turn for a free ride. "Privileged" Yeah, Id say that pretty much describes todays athletes who get a free education for an ability that has nothing to do with the primary mission of a school. White or black. Each and every one that does not suit up for practice or the next game based on the agreement terms of these VERY privileged athletes should be equally removed from the football team immediately if that is the basis for their free ride. Send them each an invoice for unpaid tuition and if they cant pay it or get a student loan, send them home. All three of my kids would have loved to have qualified for some type of scholarship to Mizzou. But they were 5'8" and 135 lbs and didn't get a penny off and are all still struggling to find a way to pay their way thru 4 years of college even if it takes ten years while working full time. My youngest has pretty much given up. My son in law will be giving up a third of his pay for the next twenty years to pay off his loans. But for whatever concession these football players might squeeze out of the school, they will have beat down the sole of many nonracist people who before this, might have supported their cause. In the meantime the real racist grin as they strengthen their cause. Its a vicious circle. Activism without common sense. The real non privileged folks in this country can no longer be categorized by shapes, sizes, abilities and colors. I believe in freedom of speech, I just can not agree with those who think its ok to shoot into a crowd then assume those lucky enough to not get hit are are gonna really be sympathetic to their cause.

So I think this came about because I think these protests started over grad student benefits and morphed into what it is.

My program is pretty niche. If you look at the broader academics, I can think of no better example than Mizzou struggling to stay in the AAU. Thats a major deal when it comes to getting research money, something that Mizzou, as the state's flagship and land grant school, should compete for at all times. As for other schools, the rankings are out there. Mizzou is slipping. They've actually improved their engineering department somehow, but for the other sciences and humanities, it's not great. Regionally, they're behind Vandy, Illinois, northwestern, U-Chicago, Texas, and A&M clearly. Probably on par with Iowa state and ku. But as the flagship university of the state, they compete nationally with universities, not just regionally. By that measure, Mizzou is losing ground. By that measure, Mizzou should be doing its best to improve its academic reputation, and that includes getting better grad students, which is a real struggle when you don't treat them very well compared to other schools.

All the blue collared workers of America are crying for you Coward. I'm so sorry man. Can't believe they put you through such a tough time in your life. I'm glad you made it out ok. Hopefully not too scarred.

Give me a ************************** break!

You're on mosports all day at work. What do you know about blue collars? Did you have a drink with a plumber one night?

I've been at work for 4 hours before you get to school to use the government funded computers to make your posts, nancy pants.

I know a plumber, he went to Valle, and yes we've drank beer together.

Hey Im on mosports literally all day while at work and consider myself blue collar. I went to college, got what I thought was going to be a valuable degree (biology), and still ended up with a crap job! Who would have thought that getting a higher education and trying to better ones self would still land you living paycheck to paycheck and just barely scrapping by?

Did I ask anyone to cry for me? I have a great job and a great life. Don't know why anyone would cry for me.

This is why I like talking to PlayerTwo. Him and I don't see eye to eye. That's fine. I know him personally. If he has a problem he knows how to reach me. We disagree on stuff and it's cool. You get wound up so tight I actually feel sorry for you.

Have they interviewed the hunger strike victim. CNN com-on man!
http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/09/us/jonathan-butler-hunger-strike-missouri-profile/

Here a pic of hunger strike guy back in August when they cut his perks

That crowd looks alittle more white then his current crowd.

I just dont like a group a grad students hoodwinked everybody to achieve their objective back in August to remove the president.

I wonder if Pinkel would be supporting his players if they were striking to get a minority head football coach as part of their demands?
