I-70

Wellington was always a top in their class.
Concordia had a few teams that were loaded
Santa Fe was very good there for a while
Sweet Springs had a championship appearance
Orrick had a few good runs in there too.
Orrick, under Pat Richard, had probably the best program in C1. Agree with Mowestdad very sad what is happening. It kinda reminds me of the GRC up North.

In not making C1 the catch all, these small towns are having trouble competing, let alone surviving against schools more than twice their size. A very good chance, there are fewer than 32 schools in C5 next year the way it is set up now. Coach Richard had a good run of athletes and he knew what do with them. However, he also knew when to get out of Dodge,

assume:
wellnap - 11 man next year
st pauls - (should just drop football and stick to soccer)
crestridge - will be looking for a new conference maybe
concordia - 11 man hanging on a thread?
santa fe---they may want to go 8 man
lone jack---co-op so will stay 11 man
SS ---same ---coop --but did see their ad and HC commenting publicly about predicted lack of numbers next year---so maybe 8 man
orrick already 8 man

did i miss any news though or why did you bring it up?

According to the 8-man coaches' Twitter account, Santa Fe has already decided to drop down.

Looks like the WEMO may only have (2) eleven man team next year if the rumors that a swirling about are true. Adrian and Cass-Midway.

Not sure you can say Midway and Adrian are leaving the WEMO, the WEMO left them. They all went to 8-man. As for the I-70 Santa Fe, St Paul and Sweet Springs are all going to 8-man. Concordia cannot be far behind with those three neighbors going. Wellington, Crest Ridge and Lone Jack with be scrambling as will the Kaysinger teams that had work out a deal to play I-70 schools.

Is 150 the number to play 8-man?
Yes, With so many schools hovering around 150 why doesn't MSHSAA allow any school who qualifies for 1A be eligible for 8 man. To me that would make more sense especially when you consider some of the schools who will be left on an 11 man island. I think a school who is on the verge of 1A-2A would have a much better chance of fielding a 11 man team than a middle of the pack 1A school with 151 enrollment.

Really sad to see the WEMO and I-70 dissipate those two conferences produced some awfully good football teams.

I almost think it would be worth Crest Ridge and Wellington going 8 man to keep the conference alive.

million dollar question--------so has everyone's enrollment dropped? or are just fewer kids out for football at santa fe, SS, st pauls, due to the concussion panic?---------i know a lot of schools in that area are seeing enrollment decreases for sure but just curious if that is correct

from the looks of the enrollment numbers, it doesn't appear that they are all getting smaller so it must just be less kids wanting to play football.

It's not just those schools. And it's not just the "concussion panic."
It's been trending this way for several years. Probably a topic better saved for the boring off-season.

Because the Class 1/2 cut-off is a moving target. As each team goes 8-man, that number goes up. It is better to have a set number. Now you can argue whether it is too low or not.

Wellington on the fence about going 8-man
St. Paul’s, Concordia, Santa Fe, sweet springs are all going 8-man next fall.
Crest Ridge is staying 11-man
Lone Jack even without coop is too big to go 8-man so they will stay 11-man
Orrick remains 8-man

I don’t know if Concordia’s board has voted yet but I would bet they go 8-man.

Why have a set number? If a school or community feels it is in the best interest of their program to go 8 man why should it matter? After all the argument from many of the schools who have made the move at the last second "it is not about winning or losing but safety". With that said what's the difference between a school with an enrollment of 200 having 20 players forced to play 11 man and a school with 149 with 30 plus that is being allowed to play 8 man. This just doesn't make any sense.

Even though Wellington is traditionally a strong team, if you look at their enrollment, I would bet they go down as well. It's a shame if they do though.

Unfortunately, the numbers for football are dropping and many schools are effected. I’ve seen urban schools that are class 4 with less than 20 kids on their roster. If it was better for them, maybe 8-man could be their alternative. You might need to have 2 classes for 8- man or put a cap on schools that qualify for the postseason. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if every team didn’t play after the regular season...

Has Well-Nap's numbers dropped that much? I thought they still had anywhere from 25-30 kids on the team.

touchdownsilly - I think theoretically a larger school could have an 8-man schedule. They just couldn’t be in the MSHSAA postseason as it is set up now.

I was told directly by St. Paul they are not going 8 next year. But as mentioned earlier, Santa Fe has voted, Concordia is expected to, and Sweet Springs is seriously discussing and believed to be leaning toward 8.

St. Paul, Sweet Springs, Concordia, have all three informed their 2020 opponents they are going 8 man all 3 are official.
