How will the new way of counting change things?

With MSHSAA set to do counts for classification every year, now.. and with them only counting 3 classes (9-11) How much impact will that have on Current Classes?... Who is likely to move up or down?

I’m sure a lot of people (myself included) are wondering the same thing! (I, for one, didn’t even know they were only counting grades 9-11...)

it kind of makes sense, why would you want to include this years senior class in determining classifications for next year when the kids wont be in school.

counts for 9-11 probably be much more representative of the number of kids enrolled for next year

Since they won't be counting the incoming 9th grade class, it won't be based on a forecast that can be fu

And since the incoming freshman class isn't being counted (it was more of a forecast number), the room to fudge numbers will be less, not that anyone does this, of course.

PROPOSAL 12 - (Annual Enrollment Collection and Classification Determination) - (PASSED) - 393 FOR, 97 AGAINST

Amends 5.1.5 and 5.1.6 to allow official enrollments to be reported to MSHSAA directly, and to base classification on three grades (freshmen, sophomores, and juniors) rather than four grades (9-12).

How could that many schools vote against this? This plan makes perfect sense to me.

For small schools graduating a larger/smaller than normal senior class the previous school, it could make some changes. Otherwise status quo.
Much larger/smaller incoming freshmen classes are not as big a factor (although much more so on the girls side) on that years athletic success so changing to this counting system makes sense.

Fall attendance numbers have been turned into DESE and schools will confirm or resubmit numbers in February, according to DESE

Will this solve the issue that people have complained about in the past about Maryville having a higher DESE# then MSHSAA enrollment number. (Something to do with MO Academy on Northwest Campus)

Why would people whine about that? It's a tiny program and I doubt many (or any) play athletics. They are also overloaded with college courses so they probably wouldn't have time even if they wanted to participate. On top of that, many are international students so I doubt football is their thing.

Also, it is closing in spring 2018.

i think at one point there was discussion about making class 1 be the catch all instead of class 5. Is that out the window? I liked that idea better than Class 5 being the catch all.

I believe the count for classification will not longer use the DESE numbers but schools will report their numbers directly to MSHSAA

The classification decision in August will allow for schools that make a late move to 8 man or cancel football all together to be taken into consideration. As far as changes in classification, I don't think the final decision has been made.

The original thought was 64 in every class all the way down and class 1 being catch all. I've heard the class 6 schools wanted to keep their 32, and 64 at that level would water down their competition (take that for what it's worth). So I think the next option was 32 at class 6, 64 the remainder of the way down, and keep class 1 the catch all. Don't know when this will be finalized probably some time in the spring when football advisory committee meets again.

Not sure it is as big of an advantage once you reach class 5 & 6 sizes, but from 4 down the enrollment differences are pretty big. The teams left this week in class 4 have huge enrollment differences. Obviously the favorites year in and year out from all of the smaller classifications come from the top.
How good would Lafayette or Harrisonville be if they had 150 to 200 more boys to choose from in their enrollment.

That is what i heard too. But i didnt know if that had been voted on. Keep class 6 at 32, and then 64 in all other classes until class 1. I like it. I think it would really shake up some things.

Again people aren't bringing geography into play when thinking about districts. Class 5 is the catch all because the majority of those schools are in either St. Louis, Kansas City or Southwest Missouri. Class 1 with the poorer schools are already spread out, if it's the catch all class it makes it even more spread out.

breakdown should be;

6-48
5-48
4-64
3-64
2-64
1-catch all

don't think they would be more spread out....maybe the same. Districts would look virtually the same they would just have 5 or 6 in each one instead of 8.

Class 1 as the catch all is a terrible idea. It will make enrollment splits between the smallest and largest in each class even wider in the lower classes which are already proportionally out of wack. I could get behind Class 4 as the catch all, but really at that point why change what's working.

August classifications - really? That won't last more than 2 years IMO. I also don't like re-classifications every year. With the 4 year cycle for Quarterfinal and Semifinal rotations 2 years works well. Soap box dismounted.

August isn't bad IMO. Allows for those who dropped football or moved down to 8 man to be taken into consideration and the districts evened up then. Also you could wiggle some potential good matchups in the state playoffs as well into the mix.

I can't say which class is best suited as the catch all but the numbers seem to add up pretty well the way they do it now. I also kind of like the 48, 48, 64, 64, 64, etc idea but the current system is fine too. I like the way the odd numbers in C5 creates a 'play-in round' in districts, rather than sending the worst team immediately to the slaughter house. I would kind of like to see that expanded to all classes if the math could be worked out.

If they want to wait until August to refine the numbers, so be it. Change it every year? I guess so. Personally I don't think there is anything "broke" with the current system, so why go around changing it?

What difference does it make if a class is "too spread out"? Each school has their regular season schedule regardless of whether the old former class 2 school down the road suddenly became class 3. The only point would be that come district play, maybe it's too spread out, but you're talking about a single longer road game perhaps. Nobody at MSHSAA ever thought it was too far for West Plains to drive to Carl Junction or vice versa, a 3-hour drive for a "district" game.

Proposal: 6 classes of 56 teams each. Each class has 8 districts of 7 teams. Top-ranked district team gets a bye in week 10 (no more 1/8 slaughters). Bottom district team goes to #2 instead. All district games slightly more competitive. #1 gets rewarded with a bye, a chance to heal, a chance to scout the 4/5 game, all rewards they earned by going 9-0 or 8-1. Make Class 1 the catch-all.

Would it make the disparity between the top and bottom of classes (minus class 1) any different? Worse? Better?

I'm busy with 2017..............will worry about all this in December. :)
