Helias Recruiting

I’ll take the bait. They aren’t getting many from Taos or Wardsville. Helias is like most private schools with families that feed the school year after year. That is just fact. Can’t change it. New family moves to town. What are the schools like? Oh, JC built a new shiny high school. In theory everyone is happy and sends their kids to smaller enrollment older high school or the new majestic building. In reality, parents ask what is the discipline in the district like? Uh oh. Helias comes up or move to BO district. Neither have to recruit. It’s done for them by local school district choices. This is reality. There are many former Jays that have kids on roster at Helias and BO. Ask yourself why? I bet they weren’t recruited. They chose that pathway.

So I guess I really don’t see the whole point of Helias recruits this and that blah blah blah. There’s three larger class high schools in the city, the talent is going to be spread around.

Private schools don't hand pick or recruit kids to build an "Allstar Football Team". Private schools have to recruit STUDENTS & FAMILIES period to exist! What don't people on this thread understand about the fact that some families PREFER to have their child in an academic institution that has a foundation in faith and religion. Not to mention, usually smaller class sizes and less chances for negative influences. ENOUGH WITH THE HATE FOR PRIVATE SCHOOLS.

Let's go Jays!

Like I said in an earlier post the two high schools are surely going to hate losing the “mayor’s cup” to Helias every year. So, the coaches, players and fans have a couple of choices. One, sit and bitch about a competitive private school in town. Or two, raise the bar, outwork them, recruit what you got walking hallways and get the trophy. Can’t see how being in conference with HC won’t make JC schools have some pressure to get better and keep kids. For that matter, Columbia will have to get better.

Oh, and Sedalia.

I don't think people are hating on the families that take their kiddo to a private school for the enhanced enrichment. They are upset with the schools that bring in kids to play sports (not just football) that don't have to pay for school. It was proven years ago that there was a private school in KC that owned houses that amazingly the new QB or RB would move into and not have rent or tuition. So that is the hate. Most people that put their kids in private school for the faith or class size don't care about football or any other sport for that matter.

The public schools really need some consistency around the recruiting. Many times it is a rogue coach and/or A.D. using addresses that the kids don't even live in. The kids drive in every day from surrounding communities. In this day and age where everyone has a camera, you would think rival teams would pounce on that if they hear those things through the rumor mill. I feel bad for the districts and coaches that are stuck in a vicious cycle of losing. It is hard for them to keep their top athletes, because they can never build a team around them without them being poached before the team is in place. I think we all rally around the Winnetonkas and Raytowns of the state, because we know the long and much more difficult road they've had to take to get back to winning.

Or 3.... join them
Also: How in the heck can it be a Mayor's cup trophy when there is another HS in town now. Does that school not matter in the trophy hunt?

Couldn't agree more. I DESPISE the idea of private religious schools, mainly because I'm not religious. They should be able to exist, IMO. But they shouldn't be allowed to compete with publics. That's my stance. If I were forced to live inside the JC public district boundaries, there's not a chance in hell I'd send my kid to JC public schools. I'd pay for Helias or Blair Oaks.

but did they bring out the Mayor trophy when they played? what if all go 1-1? Silliest thing I have ever heard of in my opinion
No argument from me. I just said if JC or CC want told hold it they will need to raise the bar. To me conference titles are fine. Winning your last game in the playoffs is what counts.

Wow, there are some shitty understandings regarding Private schools on MoSports.

Are you all aware that public schools recruit (probably 10x more than private)?

Do you really think that private institutions like Helias, SLUH, CBC, Rockhurst actually have to "recruit" families? Doesn't their success recruit itself? Can you fault a family for making an investment into their kids future? Does it matter that schools offer financial assistance to struggling families who want the same education as well off families? Not too many of these schools can afford to allow students to go to school for free in this economy. How can they keep their doors open?

Why does this warrant the need for a separate state championship? How about Missouri follow TX and have just 1 state championship (regardless of school size). I see that some of you here are participation trophy kind of guys.

Again, be more realistic guys. Don't hate in private schools just because.

they can't hold a candle to what Lutheran st. Charles has done. The head coach is a good man who played for the Rams he runs an 8th-grade football skills program, the kids like him so much many decide to go to high school at Lutheran to play for him, they are loaded. Duschene high school has a diverse person whose job is to recruit students from across the river in St. Lois county their football program has been down until last year, they are very good and most of the players are soph. Christain high 3 years ago had a group of guys come to their school that all played together on a super bowl 8th-grade team. Cardinal Ritter, Lutheran North, Trinity get the very good players in the surrounding public schools. You can't blame kids for wanting too to these very successful programs.

It seems you’re unaware of how much actual recruiting these schools do lol.

they go to little league games and offer playes free tuition to come play.
SLUH sucks but offers kids free tuition to come play. Rockhurst literally has a strangle hold in at minimum 3 of the club trams and filter players into their school

it seems you might be a little naive lol

be realistic. Private schools don’t have the distric barrier. Public schools, if caught, must forfeit their entire season (2010 E. St Louis flyers team for example)
A good coaching staff won’t risk it. Private schools don’t care cause their is no rule
Get real

You sound like a Trumpeter (lots of emotion, with NO PROOF). Show me facts, share names of any Head Coach willing to risk the integrity of their program for an 8th grade kid who can go any which way with that information. Don't say..."I've heard xyz" and drag schools name through the mud out of pure prejudice.

EVERY coach is aware that recruiting for athletic reasons is in pure violation of MSHSAA bylaws. No coach is dumb enough to do that. Could there be a coat-tail influencer at middle school games who went to a private school and tells a family, you should go to Lutheran North because ___. But you will NEVER catch Carl Reed, Scott Pingel, Robert Steeples etc. at 8th grade games poaching kids and offer "free tuition".

Only continuous folklore from people who have disliked private schools their entire life.

Stop it. You sound silly.

Raise the bar or recruit better? I am fine with kids choosing to go the private school way IF and only IF they pay their way for it! Don't have big donors throw money into a scholarship fund and then tell a kid you can come here and not pay anything. The world just does not work that way.

I mean how do you think high level college athletics work?

Sooooo. Now high school is high level college? Next you know high school kids will be demanding money for the use of their names and signing endorsement deals..

I'm just saying that Is how the world works if you are phenomenal at sports you get your school payed for. If i'm a D1 athlete I can go to a CC on A+ scholarship money for free or MU for free both are options. Do I agree with privates in smaller classes amassing super teams no. I think if you are private you should be in a separate division or Class 6. Is that fair to University Academy or Incarnate word not really, but the Lutheran North and Trinities are not fair to the small classes and it helps the most schools by having them separate

Heck, it's not fair to class 6 either.
According to SBNation, nationally only 1 player for every 172 are a 3 star athlete or above. DeSmet currently has 8 seniors that are 3 star or above. Statistically, that means they should have 1,376 seniors playing on their football team.
The top 5 class 6 public school teams have a combined total of one senior 3 star athlete. Is this fair?

Well if you are a public high school you better damn well find a way to recruit what you have walking your hallways. The JC schools have lowered their expectations of kids for years and discipline has become a big issue. My point is HC and BO don’t have to recruit kids from JC/CC. Parents don’t want their kids in that system. HC got kids from Taos/Wardsville for years. With the success BO has had that has slowed. Raising the bar means the program has to raise the bar. The coach, players and even parents. Instead of sitting around complaining try to outwork them. It is obvious that MSHSAA isn’t going to take drastic steps in the matter. In the 1980s and 1990s JC felt Rockhurst had an edge with recruiting. They found a way to beat them. Not every year but still found a way. Raised the bar. That’s all.

Again.... Pay your way and dont live off of scholarships..

Again, if MSHSAA isn’t going to monitor/act on it complaining about it won’t get you too much. Have to raise expectations and play harder.
Those are things that are self monitored by schools. That is what self reporting is. Again, not knocking private schools at all. IMO if a student goes to a private school, athlete or not should pay his or her way.

If the monitors are the ones helping hand out the gifts that isn’t likely to happen either. Hope Coach Bailey stays and gets the kids a little more gritty and hard nosed. Playing a private school is never easy. But there are ways to compete with them. The question is do the kids and parents want to work that hard.

It works both ways. St. Pius X is surrounded by the public schools that look like shopping centers. Well, you can go to NKC, where we just did a $65M upgrade or you
