Game changed to allow JBS to avoid missing class
By the middle of the fourth quarter last Friday at Osage, it is was apparent that Monett was advancing to the Class 3 semifinal.
Coming into the game between the Indians and Cubs, it was known that the winner would host the semifinal round.
As the host school, certain responsibilities fall on the site coordinators to ensure that the game can be played such as date, time and facility requirement.
At the conclusion of the Cubs' win, Monett Athletic Director Daryl Bradley, who also serves as the site coordinator, submitted the required paperwork to the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) stating that the district would like the game to be played on Friday at 7 p.m., according to the interpretation of the rules.
"The way I read the playoff packet, the playoff game should be on Friday unless the host school didn't have lights, then it could be moved to Saturday," Bradley said.
According to the a playoff informational packet, sent to all member schools on Oct. 1 from Harvey Richards, the associate executive director of MSHSAA: "If a school does not have lights, the game can be played at Saturday at 1 p.m."
The opponent was not known when Bradley entered his paperwork because John Burroughs and Central (Park Hills) did not play until Saturday.
According to Bradley, after the Bombers were victorious, he and John Burroughs Athletic Director Peter Tasker engaged in cordial but disagreeing conversation about the game time.
Bradley said Monett wanted a Friday night game to keep pace with the other side of the bracket, with California and Oak Grove playing on Friday.
"The winner of our game is going to have one less day of rest and preparation," Bradley said. "Plus, the other championship qualifying team will have the opportunity to scout us at home."
The contention of Tasker, according to Bradley, was that the football team and cheerleaders and pep bus would have to miss a day of school and that the 259 miles would prevent their fans from attending.
Using the latest enrollment figure for John Burroughs provided by MSHAA's website of 409, the football team of 30 players, with 10 cheerleaders plus a pep bus would mean more than 10 percent of the student body would miss a full or partial day of class.
While neither side was willing to relent, both schools agreed to ask Richards for a MSHSAA opinion. He settled the discussion by requiring Monett to host the game on Saturday.
Richards cited the distance between the schools as a key factor. Even though Burroughs would still miss some school with a Saturday game, as the Bombers plan to leave early and spend the night in Monett on Friday, they would not miss an entire day.
"This is the first year where we were allowed to choose when they wanted to play, [on Friday or Saturday]," Richards said. "Before, you had to play on Wednesday, Monday or Saturday depending upon the playoff round, but the new bracket changed the playing dates."
Richards also said MSHSAA has the authority to step in and set a game time for teams that cannot agree on when to play.
"If two teams can't agree, I'm going to step in and make the decision," Richards said. "Both schools, in this case, were polite and professional in their disagreement. I can tell you next year, [MSHSAA] will have days and times set on when the games must be played."
Richards also said schools would have the right to change the set date if they both agreed.
Of the 10 semifinal games this weekend, half are on Friday and half are on Saturday. Richards said he had to decide a game date and time for one other semifinal.
"I saw both sides to the situation, but still thought we had valid points for a Friday game," Bradley said. "Our compromise was for MSHSAA to make the call. They did, and now we'll be ready for the game on Saturday and hope to have a large crowd."
Calls to John Burroughs officials for comment were not returned.
It's Friday night because we get the choice as the home team and I personally would rather have Harrisonville in school and travel the same day!
