Our private high schools recruit students not only from their grade schools but from public grade schools. I'm guessing it's not a MSHSAA violation for private school recruiters and parents to talk with public school students about attending a private high schools. Yes indeed it happens all the time. I'll use Carte'are Gordon as an example. Carte'are was planning on attending Webster high school but changed his mind and enrolled @ Vianney high a few days before school started his freshman year. This is all legal because the junior high he was attending ( Webster middle school ) was not a member of the MSHSAA therefore making it legal for him to be contacted by any private high school. Vianney wanted Carter'are as a student not as an athlete but could tryout for any sport offered @ Vianney. Carte'are tried out for basketball and made the team.
All of our private schools enroll students from public school districts. I'm guessing some of the better athletes and the super intelligent are targeted in the 5th and 6th grade and a rapport is made before our public high school coaches know the talent in the lower grades. It is my understanding that an alum can pay the tuition for a student to attend a private school and break no rules. We can get mad and talk about how unfair it is but the rules have not been violated.
It would be interesting to know what school district some of our local private school stars would be attending if they were not enrolled in a private school.
Let's name a few Chaminade players and what public high school they would have attended? We could pick on SLUH, CBC, Desmet and Whitfield. Let's include St. Mary's and Vashon.
