(FESTUS) Festus R-6 Varsity Head Football Coach Russ Schmidt has submitted his resignation to the Board of Education, ending his 13-year tenure as the face and the voice of the football program.

A press release from the district reads,

“There is no question that Coach Schmidt cared deeply about every student-athlete and routinely had players immersed in community service projects. Coach Schmidt also made sure teachers received recognition for their work with student-athletes. The football team’s “Teacher of the Week Award,” started by Coach Schmidt, shined the spotlight on teachers the players chose as ones who are making a difference in the lives of students. The District appreciates the hard work and labor that Coach Schmidt put forth on behalf of the program the past 13 years. The search for a new football coach will commence in early December with the goal of having a recommendation to submit for approval at the February Board of Education meeting.”

Know of Festus but nothing of their football program. Did this coach resign or "resign"? What is this school/program like? Asking for all the STL private school coaches who were fired.

He has been coaching a long time. I would guess it’s a retirement. Festus is always competitive and frequently very good. They just upgraded their stadium a few years ago. They have a long history of good coaches.

Except for the guy before Coach Schmidt. He was rough!

Rumors was they chased that coach out of town with torches and pitchforks.

If you go to mymoinfo.com you can listen to an interview with Coach Schmidt and he tells his side of things...but basically he was told by the AD that the football program needed to go in a different direction. Still going to teach at the school.

"Resign";)...should be tons of interest in the job though....great parental support with realistic expectations, super super nice facilities, great community support, some of the highest academic scores in the state...there should be a line out the AD's door for applicants.

Makes you wonder what exactly the admin's "another direction" is. 81-59, 7 conf titles in 13 years. This season 5-6, with losses to teams with 8,8,9, and 10 wins; one of them a class 5 and another a class 6. Maybe unrealistic expectations will make that line out the door a little shorter.

My guess is, the board went rogue. Normally the case when you hear something like this.

I don't think the board is even remotely the problem there. Most school boards are clueless about the ins and outs of athletics and activities and will always follow whatever admin recommends. Either way, they got rid of him and it will be an interesting story to see what new direction they go, with whom, and the results.
