It seems we are moving back to a "phase 1" environment very soon if we follow Europe again, and that sucks.
I have bad feeling the winter sports are going to get postponed until the spring, including college sports possibly.
I know up until this point you had 4 years to complete your MSHSAA eligibility..Will parents and their kids decide to stay back another year if given the choice?
I don't think many of us thought that was going to be the case earlier on this year, but now with the NCAA giving an extra year of eligibility to all the athletes it changes the game.
Most high schoolers want to get out, but I would say the opposite is true in college. Most of us would have chose to stay in college another year if it was being paid for.
So where are the scholarships going to be for incoming freshman?
If MSHSAA reverses that 4 year rule, will the floodgates open and you have a domino effect all the way into the middle schools of kids staying another year. I would think they are well aware of the NCAA decision and the impact that has on the 2021 high school graduating class.

covid sucks. but, I can't imagine allowing high school athletes being given an additional year of eligibility.

What classes are kids going to take for an extra year in high school? Pretty much every kid is ready to move on.

that will never happen plus most kids want out of high school. 90% of kids play sports for fun and they will be fine if they have to miss a season. It will hurt for a little while then as kids do they move on to something else. I coached 88 high school teams and enjoyed every moment but kids are resilient you could lose a game at the buzzer and they would be down for about 30 minutes then they are back to their selves. keeping them healthy is the most important thing.

MSHSAA does not govern High Schools and has nothing to do with academics. The schools would not allow students to stick around for another year - for athletic reasons. If an athlete chooses to transfer for athletic reasons, MSHSAA will block him/her from participating in sanctioned sports.

If there are parents THAT hung up on scholarships they could always take a gap year from HS and play club ball (depending on the age of the kid).

It really sucks for seniors this year that would have gotten a scholarship. Their future path probably changes quite a bit if the money isn't there. I'm disappointed the NCAA did that. The athletes were still getting scholarships this year even if the season was cancelled, and 99% probably end their playing days in college, so why allow them to get another year of eligibility and scholarship money. It ends up penalizing those that are next up.

I agree with you guys. It opens up Pandora's box at the high school level. Many parents have a legitimate argument from an academic and social learning point of view, especially elementary and middle school kids.

Staying along with the theme of eligibility, I know first hand how bad the grades are with these virtual or hybrid systems. I have friends across many districts and I keep hearing the same thing. Many, many kids haven't been able to keep the bare minimum grades to even tryout. I've never understood how someone couldn't manage to get 7 D's, but this lack of 5x a week educational structure is crushing those that don't have executive skills. Heck, my son was expecting 3 kids to be on his team at tryouts tomorrow, and all three are ineligible (FYI, their parents all chose virtual over hybrid).

Are you guys in education hearing the same type of stuff?

You open a hornets to allow people back for another year for sports. That's the reason meesha is supposed to be around. To keep everything sports equal.

There is a slim percentage of kids that needed their senior year to get a scholarship, most have film from jr year and can show work outs etc. it may effect D2 some, and D3 the most but D3 isn’t getting a scholarship anyway. If needed they could not go to college go to a prep school out East Play another year and then college If it was that important

There are a significant number of prep schools that serve this purpose for athletes that are capable of playing college athletics and want to play a year to prepare. You see a lot of kids pursue this in basketball, not so much in football..

Truth is, if you want to play college sports bad enough, there is probably a roster spot for you somewhere, and if you're good enough you'll play.

Problem is, "somewhere" isn't good enough for most parents these days.

Parents is the key word in all of that!!

This is the worst grades I have ever had in 21 years now. You have the students who are doing the at home work and returning it to you in a matter of hours, and on the other end you have students who have not even joined a google classroom. Add in parents who are at work, parents who don't care, rural places with no or poor internet, etc. and it is a real mess.

There should be a real concern of we have students who were out of school from March-May, started later in Aug and some even in Sept, and are now going 2 days per week. They are way behind where they should be.

This will be known as the Rona generation
