STLFTBL’s take on the Remaining eight FB District Champs.

Very interesting as I look at our 8 local teams still playing. For you Private vs Public debaters, we have 6 Private school District Champs and 2 Public school District Champs. I have been saying all year th=at this is a down year for the STL except for the 5 Super Teams. Wish I could include Cardinal Ritter as a Super team but they are in the same Class as Trinity. If they were in the same class as Lutheran N, I would give them a chance in that Class, but they are in it with Trinity. They may have some quality offensive weapons, just not sure they have the lineman and Defense to compete with Trinity. Don’t get me wrong, if Ritter wins the title I will be elated for them, I want all the STL schools to win. Now, in looking at quality wins and losses, I look at schools like Francis Howell, Kirkwood. Pattonville and Eureka as the bottom Tier of the Quality wins, as those teams were just a little above average this year when comparing them to the teams outside the STL area. Here is my take on the remaining 8:

Real Threats to win State- CBC (C6), Vianney (C5), Ladue (C4), Trinity (C3), Lutheran N (C2)

1. CBC- Quality wins. Edwardsville, DeSmet (2), Vianney, Rockhurst. Quality Loss- St. Johns (DC). By far the elite team in St. Louis. Great players all over the field. Prohibitive favorite to win the Missouri Class 6 title. Coaching is of the top quality. QB is the best in STL for this system, if he had his brother’s height he could play on Sundays. Top RB is a stud who CBC can ride to the title.

2. Vianney- Quality win- DeSmet, Quality losses- CBC, Fayetteville (AR), Elder (OH) Only quality win is over DeSmet, but they are a Class 5 team. Their schedule has prepared them for this stage. Big game against Jackson this week. Kyren Williams is one of the best in the Lou. Not as sure thing as CBC, but they could win the Class 5 title.

3. Ladue-Quality wins- Kirkwood, Pattonville. Rams have 2 quality wins only because they beat just above average Pattonville and Kirkwood, who happen to be Class 6 teams. Ladue has a quality defense and offense and solid coaching. RB/DB Hunt is a beast and they also have a stud OL/DL who has signed with the Illini. They will be tested vs West Plains and Webb City, but I think they are a threat to win Class 4. They also could lose to West Plains.

4. Trinity- Quality win- LaSalle (OH) Quality losses- Colquitt Co (GA), East St. Louis. Trinity is real threat to win Class 3, almost as big of a favorite as CBC. They have speed all over the field. They should not lose to anyone in Class 3. These kids have been performing for four years and they are hungry for the Title, they now have a Coach who is getting the best out of them.

5. Lutheran N- Quality win- MICDS. Quality losses- Nazareth (IL), La Salle (OH), Homewood-Flossmoor (IL). I think the Crusaders have the team to win Class 2. Running back 23 is the real deal. He will make the difference. Defense has improved a lot this year, but they will have to get through some tough teams like Blair Oaks and Lamar to win the title. I think they have enough to do it.

District champs but not ready to win the Title- Zumwalt N (C5), MICDS (C4), Cardinal Ritter (C3)

1. Zumwalt N- Quality win- Francis Howell. Zumwalt North is not as good as they were last year. Only quality win was in Game 1 versus Francis Howell, which Howell could have won with last second FG. Panthers are just above the average team, might be able to beat Battle, but not a threat to win the title. I think they have talent and the coach gets a lot out of them, just do not believe they are a serious threat for the title.

2. Cardinal Ritter-Quality win- Cahokia. Only big win was over Cahokia week two, and that was a close one. Ritter has benefited from a weak schedule and an easy road so far in the playoffs. Not sure if they have enough on the O and D lines to beat a quality team. I think Ritter has enough to win this weekend, but Mount Vernon will be a tough task in the Semi Finals. Not sure how they react to a tough team in a hostile environment.

3. MICDS- Quality wins- None, Quality loss- Lutheran North. MICDS is just an above average team. They almost beat Class 2 Lutheran North, but they are not a solid threat to win Class 4. Hannibal will be a tough task, if they happen to survive then Smithville will take care of them. Bundy is a great athlete, but they just do not have enough to get it done. They played close games with two average teams in Parkway N and Hazelwood E, a state team would of handled those two teams easily.

I think the STL teams with the absolute best shots are CBC and Trinity. The rest should worry. That’s my honest opinion.

As of today I would give CBC a 98 percent chance to win C6. Vianney I would put at about 40 percent (could easily lose this week). Ladue about 40 percent (that is a murderous threesome they will have to beat). Trinity I totally agree although I hope the Odessa/Maryville winner can give them a game. Would handicap them about a 90 percent shot. C2 is beyond belief loaded but LN is definitely part of that incredible foursome. I give them about a 30-35% shot. I do think Ritter could make the final but agree with your assessment of MICDS.
