District Upsets?

Woodland over Arcadia Valley 58-52 in C3D2. Opens up the path for West County to meet Saxony for Championship on Friday.

A mild upset in Class 2, District 11... #5 seeded Billings over #4 seeded Marionville 52-34

I personally don’t count 4-5 games as upsets either way. I think they are 50-50 games.

Also, are big district upsets more or less common in girls basketball than boys?

Maybe look for 6 over 3’s

I have no data to back this up, but I think big upsets are more likely to happen on the boys side. I agree with your 4/5 statement. We don’t see the repeat champions on the boy side like we do the girls side. That being said, we saw upsets like republic over Kickapoo last year. So who knows? I’m to lazy to research. So this was just my opinion.

I think the girls districts are more "top heavy" than the boys districts are for the most part. There's a bigger disparity between the better and worse teams on the girls side, so that's probably why you see more upsets on the boys side. There's just more parity.

Big upset in Class 2 District 10. Hartville, number 1 team in class 2, upset by Mansfield 52-50 in title game. Mansfield has 23 wins, so they are good, but I'd say the top ranked team in the state not winning their district is a pretty big upset.

Thayer upset Ellington 39-35 in Class 2 District 2. I think Ellington beat Thayer by 15 or so earlier in the season.

Top team by mshsaa...they were lower in max preps polls but I agree it still an upset

Blue Eye now has a very good path to the final four. They would have to be a favorite. Skyline or Miller will be eliminated Saturday. Tarkio at 26-1 will finally play a really good team Saturday against East Buchanan.

I never thought Hartville should have been ranked #1 in Class 2 as they haven’t played the toughest schedule but this loss is still a mild surprise. Blue Eye has a pretty clear path to the FF but Mansfield might have other ideas.

25-2 College Heights looms too but given their schedule I don’t see them getting past Blue Eye or even Mansfield if they make it

College Heights biggest win this year is against Sarcoxie. They had everyone back from last year. Why they didn’t beef up their schedule is beyond me. They played in a tournament earlier this year that had 2 JV teams in it. You just don’t get any better playing weak teams.

College Heights lost to some COC JV teams last summer. I know it is just summer ball but you would think they would blow out any JV teams.

Who has the edge in class 2? Miller? Skyline? Blue Eye? It’s a toss up.
Does anybody remember that Skyline beat Strafford not to long ago? I know it’s that crazy time of the year but no other class 2 team has beat Strafford.

Thayer didn't play Ellington this season.

Yep, I just checked on MSHSAA and I must have been thinking of Thayer's game against Licking. Licking beat them by 15 in that one.

Skyline has been all over the map this season. They also lost to Miller earlier and lost to Strafford by 25 the first time they played and nearly lost to Ash Grove in their last game.

Which all says that they can beat any team out there, or they could lose to any team.

The Miller vs Skyline rematch out of any game has me stumped. Hard to predict a winner of that one.

But in a gut call, I'm going with Skyline

Class 3 District 1- #2 Doniphan came from way behind and scored with 2 seconds left to beat #1 New Madrid. Very similar records going in but I think most folks would call it an upset, especially if you were there and saw Doniphan fall behind by 15 to 18 points only to make the big comeback. I think the final was 54-53.

I heard NMCC was actually up 22 in the third quarter before Doniphan made their comeback. Doniphan will take on Saxony Lutheran Wednesday in Dexter. Saxony beat West County 64-52 in C3D2 tonight.

I bet that would’ve been a wild ride to watch. Don’t see 22 point comebacks very often in HS games.

That is correct. Doniphan went to a full court press and it worked. Had the lead down to 10 at end of 3 and just kept going. Didn't think a press would hurt NM that bad but it did. Fun game to watch if you had no dog in the fight like me.
