We always talk about who has won championships and how many, but I wanted to do some research into who hasn't. It was eye opening to me the number of programs that have never won one.

Currently there's 325 programs playing 11 man football. 91 of those have won at least one. So, only 28% of current programs have a state title in football.

When you break it down by current Class, some other interesting numbers come up.

Class 1 - 23 of 63 have won at least one - 36.5%
Class 2 - 9 of 61 have won at least one - 14.8%
Class 3 - 20 of 63 have won at least one - 31.7%
Class 4 - 16 of 64 have won at least one - 25%
Class 5 - 9 of 44 have won at least one - 20.5%
Class 6 - 14 of 32 have won at least one - 43.8%

There are 18 programs that no longer exist, have dropped to 8-man, or were renamed/co-op into another program that have also won at least one 11 man state title:

DeLaSalle
Tarkio
University High (Warrensburg)
St Mary's (Independence)
Hazelwood
Southwest (KC)
North Shelby
Sumner
Parkwood (Joplin)
Memorial (Joplin)
Greenfield
Hardin-Central
O'Hara
Greenwood
Rock Port
South Holt
North Nodaway
Nodaway/Holt

Perhaps there's a situation or two from above that the evolved program claims one of these, but I am unaware of those situations and threw them out of the analysis.

Again, I'm a little shocked that 234 programs have never won a state title. Additionally, 183 programs have never even played for a state title. That's 56.3%. Mind blowing. More to come...

I remember Tarkio, and rock port having some amazing teams. This is very interesting!

Of the 90 programs that have won at least one title, exactly 1/2 have won only one. So, out of the 227 titles won by current 11 man programs, a staggering 182 of them belong to only 45 programs.

Wow, that’s kinda crazy when you think about it.

Interesting how some schools grow, some shrink, & some stay the same size over time.

Rockport and Maryville played each till mid 90's. Now Rockport has shrunk to 8 man.

Schools like Platte County, Smithville, Grain Valley have gone from 2A programs to Class 4 maybe even Class 5 soon.

Nixa was in Class 2 (1982, 1983 and 1984), Class 3 (1985-1997), Class 4 (1998-2007), Class 5 (2008-Present) and will likely be Class 6 next year.

Migration from class to class intrigues me. I found it odd that Class 2 was SO far behind the other original 4 classes in championships. When you look further, teams like Valle, Monroe City, South Shelby, Penney etc. have won titles in Class 2 and have moved down. Maryville moved up. You would think it would even out, but at least in this instance it has most certainly not.

I was just fixing to say the same thing. They're also bitter rivals to a fault.

Spent a fair amount of my youth at Tarkio High as well as a small portion of high school.

Lots of great tradition there. 'Twas a sad day when they went 8-man.

There's some history there.

South Holt, North Nodaway, Nodaway-Holt went 8 man with the first batch in the late 80's-early 90's I believe
and then Tarkio went 8-man in the fall of 2010 and Rock Port followed suit shortly thereafter to keep the rivalry alive. Tarkio was down to around 15-ish players grades 9-12 when they made the move, but I'm pretty sure I was told that Rock Port still had around 25-30 players when they decided to move to 8-man.

Would love to see both go back to 11-man someday. Tarkio could get back into the GRC and Rock Port would be forced to go back to independent or go to the KCI since they were booted out of the GRC years and years ago.

Its crazy but the first 20 years of the playoffs alot of good teams got left out and never got a shot. Some schools just never get the chance to put it all together just a new coach every 2-3 years. Pre 2006 lamar made the playoffs 3 times. Since then have won 11 of 12 district titles under coach bailey

I think Valle ended up tied with someone around 1981?
Shared 11 man titles:

1972 4A Hazelwood (9-1-1) /Southwest (KC) (9-0-2) 6-6(tie) (co-champions) Francis Field, Washington University, St.Louis
1980 2A John Burroughs (11-2-1) /Lexington (12-0-1) 6-6(tie) (co-champions) Busch Memorial Stadium
1981 2A Valle Catholic (12-0-1) /St. Pius X (Kansas City) (12-0-1) 0-0(tie) (co-champions) Busch Memorial Stadium
1986 4A Camdenton (12-0-1) /Marshall (12-0-1) 20-20(tie) (co-champions) Arrowhead Stadium
1995 2A John Burroughs (8-4-1) /Lexington (12-1-1) 14-14(tie) (co-champions) Hughes Stadium, MSSC, Joplin

Begs the question - what happened?
The story I've heard was ... Rock Port had a conference game and the officials didn't show. Their officiating crew had accidentally been sent to a different game which already had a crew. They were going to reschedule the game for Saturday but a bunch of the Rock Port players had Univ of Nebraska tickets and they decided to forfeit and go to the Nebraska game. They were subsequently kicked out of the conference.

Wow, I have never heard that. Seems like a harsh punishment.

A tortured soul indeed! Thanks for all the info!

Good story but not the real reason.

Reason stated was travel cost and late night weekday events like basketball. Rockport to Princeton or vice versa was over two and a half hour bus ride.

Real reason think they got tired of RP being dominate in several sports.

The standout stat for me is over half of our programs have never even PLAYED for a state title in 50 years now. Crazy.

Crazy is no public school in Springfield has ever played for a title. Private schools Catholic and Greenwood......the rest not so much.

Even crazier when you compare them to Columbia where every public high school has a state title, even the new one. Or compare them to the Jeff City schools. What does Springfield not have that these cities have?

Good football players? Jk. Good question. You'd think the sun would shine on their dog @$$ at least once in 50 years.

Well that's definitely false.

Rock Port was definitely past their dominant football years and hadn't hit their dominant girls bball years yet.

The only thing that rock port was dominating in the years prior to and after their departure was boys and girls track.

I heard something to the effect of, they had rescheduled a game for a saturday and changed the venue due to weather and field conditions and Rock Port refused to travel.

This could be incorrect, it's been awhile since I've had this discussion. Would have to talk to some of my contacts to know for sure.

Wasn't Rock port grc in football only? Highway 275 everything else?

The game in question was south harrison back when they ran the GRC in football. The common thought was rock port was ducking them.

I have vague memories of that. But eastbucdawgs is right in that Rock Port and Tarkio were GRC in football and not the other "major" sports. They were in the GRC for wrestling, I think, but Princeton's never had that sport.

Eastbuc, what do you think your Bulldogs' chances are Saturday? All my Princeton peeps are pulling for them (along with me, for the record).

You can add Orrick to the list of champions that no longer play 11 man as this was their last year before going 8 man. On a side note Orrick is the last Class 1 champion not named Penney or Valle.

But neither have any of the surrounding towns and schools. Willard, Nixa, Ozark, Republic & Marshfield are just waste lands void of great football. Yeah they win locally but those schools still can never compete on the levels of Webb City and have proven they cannot step up to compete with the large class schools in KC and probable St Louis. But come Basketball time those towns could all be competing for a title.

I'm pretty sure Ozark was in the State Championship game years ago, when Dan Kneeshaw was their RB.

Dan Kneewshaw played for Branson and yes they made it to the title game in 89 in 90 his senior year I believe they would lose in Districts to Aurora. But even with all Branson's talent in the 80's and 90's I am not sure they won a title either?
