Coach Holifield is one of the, if not the, classiest and best coaches to coach high school basketball in the state of Missouri. He does things the right way and never takes shortcuts. I am a better person for knowing him. Here’s to 500 more wins in Sikeston!
Nice guy too. He has always had a smile and a handshake for a guy he knows is a Poplar Bluff/Three Rivers person.@ Sikeston for his 500th career victory over 400 with Sikeston.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Impressive...C =)~
That's an incredible stretch of winning. You don't see that very often for that length of time, especially in larger small town schools.
Thanks Bucket, Greg Holifield payed his dues before arriving @ his dream job and then took advantage of his opportunity in talent rich Sikeston. Greg Holifield did it the right was by paying dues before his big chance. If you read my recent post, this is the way to do it. Do not take your dream job before you are fundamentally ready. I'm asking all of our young future coaches to pay your dues before applying for a dream basketball position but I don't think they will listen to me.
Sikeston had a coach named McDaniel who coached a long time before Greg Holifield's arrival. What was his achievements? I believe Buddy Spears was sandwiched in between McDaniels and Holifield, Am I correct?
Bucket, I know a couple of coaches who won state championships that could not teach the " Three man weave ", successfully. These coaches road the talent and got the necessary breaks to have a winning streak to start the following year. Sikeston and Richland has done the above one time in the history of their schools. Charleston and Scott County Central has had winning streaks to start their next season several times but not in a class 4 or 5 school.
Very true. Not to knock SCC or Charleston, but trying to run the gauntlet and get through St. Louis and KC talent-rich schools who have the pick of the litter makes it incredibly and ridiculously difficult for small town large schools. And it's getting harder and harder with the resources the cities offer young players. At the small class levels, you're going up against other small towns for the most part who play with the hand they are dealt. A few exceptions here and there.
Lots of schools would take 0-8 in final fours. Especially those who have never made a final four.Bucket, Cape Notre Dame won class 4 in 2008---Notre Dame also won two class 2 state championships in 1986 and 87 ( Brad Wittenborn coached the two championship teams.
The Sikeston " Die Hards " will not be happy when reports on Sikeston's record in final four championship play. The Sikeston Bulldogs have won only three games in final four play in the history of the school.
2011-------Class 4 state champions------Won two games in Columbia
2013-------Class 4 on third place----------Won one and lost one in Columbia
2016-------Class 4 4th place---------------Lost two games in Columbia
2018-------Class 4 4th place---------------Lost two games in Springfield
Sikeston's final four record in final four play-
Won 3
Lost 5
Bucket, can you explain the above record in final four play? My friends lay this record right square on the Sikeston schedule. Are my friends wrong? The Sikeston Bulldogs have played a very weak schedule this season despite all that travel to St. Louis.
Will the Sikeston Die hards admit to the schedule if the Bulldogs do not bring home the championship trophy this year. Sikeston has been ranked # 1 all season and carries the favorite role in class 4 district all the way to winning the championship game in Springfield. This seems like a lot of pressure on the senior laden Sikeston Bulldogs.
Troy may hold the record for final four defeats in final four play. That record was 0-8.
BAHAHAHAHA!!!
Bark and the Rocket group, I was the asst coach @ St. Charles in 1976. We defeated McCluer 70-55 in the third place game. There were only 4 classes @ that time. I have been an asst coach @ St, Charles and have one sectional defeat and two quarter final defeats.. I also played in a state tournament @ Brewer Field house back before you were born in high school when there were only three classes. Top coach Gary Wacker was the head coach.
The above does not qualify me as an expert but this is a message board.
Bark and Rockbro, back @ you. What experiences do you guys have in final four competition? I answered your question, I'll bet you will not answer my question? Prove me wrong.
Do you want me to post who Sikeston has scheduled and played in St. Louis this year and their records and if any are ranked? I'm waiting on your response as I have the scores here in front of me?
Bark and Rocketbro, Sikeston boys basketball is probably the most discussed team in Missouri. Many fans across Missouri can't wait to see the #1 ranked team in class 4. A final appearance will these fans happy.[/QU
Holy crap! That thing better pick a lot of cotton.Metro a new cotton picker is $700,000 not 7000
Dude-Metro, it’s TJ. Not JT. I don’t farm and know nothing about it except the hours suck and you’re at the mercy of the weather.The Sikeston @ Poplar Bluff must have been worth the admission. 103-96, we don't see anything like that in St. Louis. It's more ball control and looking for opportunities but I enjoy those type of game.
My friends in southeast Mo.( Bark, the Rockets, semo74, Train and Jt ) I was talking with one of my farmer friends in southeast Missouri a few days ago about high school basketball and farming.
My questions for you guys------My friend is buying a " Cotton Picker " for seven thousand dollars. The question is " How many farm hands will this cotton piker replace if each farm hand could pick 300 lbs. per day? Back in the late 50's and 60's, all those small schools that are drying up in southeast Missouri today had lots of houses in each district to work on these farms. Wardell high school had an enrollment 250 in high school and was the top ranked team in southeast Missouri in 1961, ( Look it up in the Sikeston Standard ) Wardell today has about 60 students. Most of the farm labor had to move to the cities for employment because They were not needed. That brings me back to your question. How many farm hands will this cotton picker replace if this was the 60's?
I enjoy talking about farming and basketball while you guys can only talk Sikeston basketball. You guys travel so much it take two sets of tires on your auto each year.
Oh now Barkley we don’t want to run Metro off it’s to much fun proving him wrong at the end of the season . Kinda like last year when we played St Mary Metro said with the schedule they play there’s no way Sikeston was goin to win that game well you see how that turned out , it’s wasnt even close , I’m not so sure St Mary would have even been in the top 3 of the SEMO Conference.
Train, Sikeston gets credit for the big win over St. Mary's in the quarters but how can you explain the next two games in the final four? I believe it was more than the other two teams were better. St. Mary's was much better then Jennings the third place winner. I can not explain what happen in Springfield other then it could have been the lack and competition or to many easy games and not enough come from behind wins.
Eagle ball this machine can replace 1600 workers. We now can see why those schools in southeast Missouri have had declining enrollment over the past 50 years and it could get worse The bigger schools like Sikeston, Poplar Bluff and Cape Central have increased enrollment. Risco is down to 32 students, North Pemiscot is down in the 50's or 60's.
Sikeston's enrollment has decreased for the last 25 years
As for Jennings, third place games are a waste in my opinion so I put zero stock in that. Grandview was a better team with three Division I athletes, one of which is the starting point guard for UTEP. But your other theory is shot because Sikeston's schedule was more difficult than Grandview's. Grandview would have been undefeated last year if not for their best player being hurt in those games.
Bucket, you are indeed a walking card caring excuse for any defeat in Sikeston basketball history. You have blamed the third place defeat in last years final four to Jennings as a non important game.
I've gotta ask, how do you know so much about Grandview? It is your opinion that Grandview would have been undefeated if a player did not have an injuries. That is not a fact!
Bucket are you involved with the Sikeston basketball team in anyway? You have taken credit and posted two final four appearances but failed to name the school. Bucket, you are a very interesting character and a protector of the Sikeston basketball program.
That’s good I hope it goes upAnd, just to show a little non-bias towards Sikeston posters...Sikeston’s enrollment is up slightly this year...for the first time in several years. Hopefully, we have hit bottom and starting on an upward trend.
That’s good I hope it goes up
It was well worth the admission and we had a standing room only crowd before the varsity game started. If not for the catwalk around the top many fans would have been turned away. Sikeston fans came early and filled the normal visitors section and spilled over to the seats behind the scorers table mixed in with P.B fans. Being homecoming made it a nice crowd but there sure weren't many folks leaving after the queen was named. Fast paced, back forth game before Sikeston took a 12 or 14 point lead with about 3 minutes left. PB. made a nice comeback to cut it 3 before missing a 3 with under 5 seconds left that would have tied the game. Fun game in front of the biggest crowd I've seen in the new gym. I don't know how you out rebound a team nearly 2-1 and give up a 100 and lose but it happened. P.B. did win the JV game.The Sikeston @ Poplar Bluff must have been worth the admission. 103-96, we don't see anything like that in St. Louis. That's a fact, but if you get that many more rebounds you should be able to offset that. Fun game to watch and a great atmosphere.3 ball
You guys don't want to play in class 5. Sources are sending in reports on Bark. We all know Bark is a " Card caring excuse " for the Sikeston basketball team and appears when needed. Both Bark and Bucket will challenge and have excuses for any defeat by the Sukeston Bulldogs. I liked the classic line about the third place game was not important as an excuse for the third place defeat in Springfield last year by the Bark. That one vaulted to the top of the excuse list faster the any excuse to date.
Another classic is climbing to the top of the excuse list is St. Louis area coaches recruit and have an have advantages over smaller school outside St. Louis. Another classic is about the skilled Long twins enrolling their junior years in Sikeston after having success in Alabama. The Longs relocated because they were homesick after 20 years in Alabama is also rising on the excuse list. I'm not sure which die-hard own this one.
Reports are coming in identifying both Bucket and Bark.
The thing is their dad was from Sikeston went to school here knew about Sikeston basketball program and wanted his sons to play for Holifield and a school with a great basketball program, what father wouldn’t want that for their kids
