Class 4 District 5 - DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN

Now that this happened, it gives us a chance to debate what appears to be a serious flaw in the system.

Webb edges Camdenton and in all likelihood will be hosting the Lakers in week 11, the district semis.

Why? Throw out records and point differentials, because each team controls those things. You could basically toss out "playing up" and strength of schedule, because conference schedules almost entirely dictate that part of the formula too.

So what pushed Webb to a .01 edge over Camdenton? The fact that Nixa and Ozark went to overtime last week, resulting in a Nixa overtime loss. This became a bonus for Webb, despite them having absolutely nothing to do with the game.

Not Webb's fault. Just a major flaw in the system. Why boost others' district point rating when there is an overtime loss somewhere else? An overtime loss might be worse than a winning hail Mary pass on the last play of regulation.

Disagree? Recognize that had Hillcrest booted a field goal at Joplin last night in the fourth quarter, then Camdenton would've bounced back ahead of Webb, and that just seems plain silly.

This. This caveat to the rules allows for a point boost even if the two worst teams in the conference go to OT against each other.

As I have stated before, I prefer the old system when you had four or five teams playing a round robin in the district. When you feed numbers into a computer you get seedings based on number crunching, and they are imprecise. Last year in class 5 in southwest Missouri Republic was seeded ahead of Nixa, and in the district championship game it was Nixa winning it 31-10.

The system is pretty solid imo except for the flaw we are discussing. If you want to make a win worth 20, a loss worth 10, and an overtime loss worth 15 as they currently do, then you have to make an overtime WIN worth only 15.

I'm not sure whether Camdenton is better than Webb City or vice versa. With their flaws, WC has been very good at burying average to below average teams. I don't see that same thing coming from Camdenton by scoreboard watching. I'm inclined to lean with WC IF they don't turn the all over. Camdenton is good enough to capitalize on Webb mistakes. Both teams will have a tough time beating the Bulldogs in CJ, though. They seem to have gotten that offense rolling.
