Carthage at Republic

They have some large kids and several with all state brothers...but it's definitely going to be a work in progress

Carthage opening possession was just dreadful but defense made some great plays and a penalty helped. Carthage was threatening to score first but an over the head snap put a stop to that.

No score going into the second quarter.

Bunch of seniors in black and orange having a hard time with a bunch of underclassmen who have never started a varsity game.

Most of carthages possessions have started with wretched field possession inside the 10. And penalties have been just atrocious since half.

Maybe I spoke too soon about not looking bad. The last several minutes have been utterly dreadful.

Republic offense has run basically unchecked in the second half. Carthage has made some plays but penalties and fumbles have been costly. Republic leading 20-7. Carthage is close to possibly scoring.

Carthage punched it in, down 14-20 so they are just a defensive stop and a td away from regaining the lead. Unfortunately that crohl kid is eating their lunch and the qb has ran for a lot as well this half. So we’ll see!

Republic turnover on downs, Carthage with a chance just on their side of midfield.

Carthage gets down to around the 5, I thought they were going to pull it off, but 2 incomplete passes into the end zone and it’s 20-14 final.

Overall Carthage looked about as I expected. Good at times with some real potential but the inexperience really really hurt them. They will get better, I still stand by my preseason prediction of 5-4 in coc.

Would have really given them a boost to snatch this game back there at the end but it wasn’t meant to be!

We were saying earlier that WC was fortunate in their district avoidance of repmo but at this point I am thinking it’s the other way around.

Carthage stole one about 10 years ago or so with a 31 yard touchdown pass from A. Derryberry to Schramm as time expired for a 40-35 victory. I guess turnabout is fair play. Republic ends a 21? game losing streak to a Carthage team that usually has their number. Defense looked great for 0 returning starters and gave them a chance to win. Did a great job taking Rexroat out of the passing game by getting enough pressure on Woods. If the offense can get a rhythm going and we can get better field position on kick returns, they'll get some momentum going.

The 2nd to last timeout, the clock stopped on 1st down with 25 seconds left to move the chains. They tried to rush a play in, but ended up breaking the huddle with 12 men and that appears to be why they waited 10 seconds to call timeout with 15 seconds left; they would have been penalized and had to use a timeout to avoid a runoff on top of that.

Watched highlights of this one. It may be first-game jitters but color me rather unimpressed with Republic outside of their QB/RB combo.

inexperienced players still almost made it happen.
They did and that was impressive. Loved the second effort and clawing back when it looked like the game was slipping away, they could have just rolled over but didn’t. Didn’t quite go their was but this group definitely has potential once they get it cleaned up a bit.

Not meant to crap on REPMO at all…but honestly…I’m not sure what makes people think they’re knocking on the door. They caught lightning in a bottle against Nixa last year. Then beat a pretty average and beat up Webb in the playoffs. When you look at the majority of their scores, they’re about what they should be. Nowhere near as good as the elite COC teams, but clearly better than the bad ones.

Maybe because they are 3-1 against the Big 4 in their last four games and just starting year 3 with their new coach.
2023 Carthage isn’t a “big 4” and everyone knows it. Calling 2022 Webb a “big 4” is a stretch. You don’t get to cherry pick to suit your agenda. What they did last year was quality. But if you’re paying attention and watching the product on the field, they probably are what they are. About as good as a really inexperienced and average Carthage, a changing Webb, and not nearly as good as Nixa or Joplin. And should be better than the rest of the COC.

I watched the Republic stream on youtube and the announcers sounded a little disappointed. I honestly thought REPMO would have done better but it is still to early to tell. On the Carthage side, I think the disappointment I was hearing from my friends in Carthage is that they are used to having a big lead at half.

If the Carthage faithful have been paying attention, they had to know this was coming. Their lower levels just haven’t been very good. Not awful, just not good.

I would’ve expected a bigger spread for REPMO, but honestly wouldn’t have been shocked had they lost. That’s kind of where I’m fairly certain they are. Punchers chance (see 2022 OT Nixa win) against the really good teams. Should beat the bad ones. Given the state of the COC in ‘23 I’d say they’ll win six or seven in the regular season.

I agree. 2 of my friends in Carthage PM me during the game and they seemed to have lost hope by halftime even with Carthage in the lead. That is what led me to believe they are just used to a big lead at half. Usually this time of year they are blowing up my phone at halftime.

Republic is good, but I think Carthage is much better than many are giving them credit for. This time next year, Carthage may be the team to beat in the COC.
