Not sure the whole story, but they haven't been good for a long time.. according to the MSHSAA the best they've been since 2013 is a game over .500 with lots of 6 win seasons.
IF I were to guess, the district is seeing that they've been very successful in football and wrestling meanwhile basketball is floundering and hasn't shown much sign of life.
Keeping it all in the family. Lol. I actually called this one. Wasn't sure if the board would really do it. How many years until Hayden takes over. 1, 2?
That would make sense. Joplin would be a tough gig, playing in the COC.. blue bloods throughout your schedule and In your District, plus a lot of long road trips.
He’ll never see the floor at Link. Hes playing on MoKan’s secondary team, and the HC is the founder of Link. That MoKan Select team has a bunch of 2023 grads going to Link’s post-grad, so I’m sure it looks like he might be going there. Look at the commits for the Academy (HS) team.
He’s a good player. But he’s not a 4* or 5*, and not a P5 guy. If you had to coach Joe Wrights kids you’d quit too….
If All is truly leaving Joplin… that would have possibly convinced Schaake to STAY in Joplin! His coaches AND teammates look miserable with him.

This is who plays at Link Academy. Another 5*. Not a local kid who MIGHT be the best player in the OC.
SO graduated med school. She wants to be in KC or has to be in KC for clinicals or residency or whatever it's called. Dude was coaching in friggn' Joplin. This isn't a tough decision or breaking news. Granted, you'd think the Globe would at least make a phone call or two and pen an article. From everything I've heard (and it's extremely reliable), there's nothing more to it than that. Nothing shady. Nothing back room. Nothing out of the ordinary. If my SO was about to be a doctor and wanted me (basketball coach at a mediocre, at best, basketball job) to move to be closer to her...I couldn't get my bags packed quickly enough.

The Kirkwood men’s basketball program will now be looking for their fourth head coach in five years since Bill Gunn (2006-2019) was suspended for a year in 2019 then released after the 2019-20 season.

Well, Wright is going to Link. But he’s playing on the post-grad. Finishing his HS now. The Link Academy (HS) team has a better roster than last year. The post-grad team isn’t anywhere near same quality. But not playing in Joplin may be worth it.
Joplin is going to struggle next year. Word is Renfro is focusing on football and will not be playing basketball.
I believe Renfro has committed to play Football at South Dakota where Isaiah Davis is playing now. So you could be right.
Yes, that leaves Hafer and a bunch of young guards. Saw them play a couple games this summer and it was rough. They’ll improve, but it could very well be a long year with many growing pains.
Wright is a D1 player and the practices alone at Link are going to put him in a better position than anything he could have done at Joplin. Link has college coaches in their gym constantly. I think him going there was best for both sides as it appeared the Joplin/Wright experience had run its course.
Agree. Absolutely best case for him. All the guys he’s playing grassroots with this summer will be there as well on the post-grad team with him. The founder and director of Link has been his coach all summer. Nike money talks….
After watching them try told the ball and try to keep the score in the 20s against Kickapoo, my kid wouldn’t play there either. Gross coaching. Rather try to lose by 20 so you can say you kept it close.
It's a coaches job to try to win, it's the other coaches job to keep them from holding the ball if they don't like it. I'd bet coaches that don't like others holding the ball have also voted against the shot clock.
Keeping the score low was how Hartville was able to beat the Aminu Greenwood teams. No one has ever said that the Hartville coach is a bad one.
Tell me you didn’t watch Waynesville/Kickapoo without telling me you didn’t watch. He wasn’t trying to win. He was trying to lose by less than 50
He wasn’t trying to win. It’s on YouTube. Go take a gander. If he was trying to win, when they were down by 20, he wouldn’t have still been telling them not to shoot. If you have a kid that plays you’d never let them sit in that loser stench of a locker room if you could help it. The score was 65-29. And he was telling them in the 4th to not shoot. Gross. Your kid would never play for him if you have an ounce of competitive spirit.
Oh I thought we were talking about Central, not Waynesville. I see Poo beat Waynesvile 65-29, and I see that most of Waynesville's games were low scoring. That was their style of play apparently, to slow it down. The Poo game wasn't some kind of aberration from the norm for them, judging by their scores in other games.
Not saying that's good or bad coaching, just saying that judging by the scores in their other games, slow it down ball was their thing. They were likely outclassed talent wise in most games as they were 9-18 last season.
I don’t personally like slow it down/stalling and would like to see a shot clock for high school ball in this state, but until that happens we’ll continue to see this kind of stuff.
