They are going to keep the name Savages but wean out images of Indians around the school. Bold.

HMMM that takes some guts in this day an age. But I like the stance.

BOLD?? I think not. What an awful mascot name. Names like Indians, Illini, Utes, and Seminoles are simply names for indigenous people and do not denote negative description of a people. Savages is a name that was used as a derogatory and descriptive name for Native Americans.

Often sarcasm is difficult to find in chat lines. The school indicated it was going to try and educate the students on the plight of the American Indian. Yet they are keeping the name Savages... but seemingly by taking away images portraying savage Indians they think they have solved the problem.

Savage can be related to beasts as in Wild untamed or ferocious animals .....and many people have been labeled savages throughout history as well to mean primitive uncivilized and brutal.

I don't see a problem because do you really think in this day and age people see Native Americans and Savage...if they do then they are some of the few hardcore racist left and nothing will change their belief's. The reality is the more you squeeze the more hardcore and fanatical people become.

Lions, Tigers, Bears are all Wild Beast. Every dictionary you look in will define savage first as a wild beast and secondly as a wild untamed person. The question is whether or not the school is changing description from a human form to animal form.

Oh please, was this school's mascot/emblem a "wild beast"? Get real, man.

No it was not, but they can retain the name and relabel it as something not related to Native Americans. Here the thing do you really believe even when this mascot and name was first brought about do you think that the Name was some slander toward Native Americans? Or do you thing that the name/mascot was chosen because the students thought the name was tough, intimidating and embodied the idea of fighting against greater odds.

I seriously doubt that all the schools and such in the past chose Indians as their mascot as a way of demeaning and belittling them, I rather suspect that they choose those names and mascots for the opposite reason. They where chosen because the respected and empathized with their culture. I mean most American erroneously claim to have some Native American Blood

I really have no issue with all Schools doing away with any form of Native American names/mascots. But on the same token if they want to keep them or rebrand them I'm for that as well. It's called freedom.

Could be the new mascot....fits the description of savage....

(of an animal or force of nature) fierce, violent, and uncontrolled. a brutal or vicious person. (of something bad or negative) very great; severe.
