seems her name was brought up in the article that USA basketball sent $800 dollar checks to its amateur athletes that played in the Jr Olympics and won the Gold Medal over the summer. The player in Alabama has been ruled ineligible for the year. A player from Illinois that was on the team reported it right away to their association and returned the check immediately. She is eligible to play. Seems MSHSAA has said Blackwell would be ruled eligible to play when the money was returned and she transferred. How can USA Basketball not be at fault here after the whole summer circuit fiasco? I get paying for everything for the team members, but to say it's for "lost wages" in the article? Could this be the story behind why she left?

What does her transferring have to do with anything. Did the other athletes have to transfer? She got caught breaking the rules. She shouldn't be rewarded for it.
Does this affect her eligibility for Mizzou?

According to ESPN, there were three high school girls involved in this payout blunder. One didn't cash the check and returned it, so she never lost her eligibility. Another girl cashed it, but then returned the money, but she's still ineligible according to her state's ruling. Blackwell cashed the check and did not return the money. Doesn't sound as if this will affect any of their college eligibility.

I'm still hearing (not first hand, but from what I consider to be good sources) there are additional reasons for the transfer having nothing to do with the cost of Whitfield or an illegal payout from USA basketball. I just hope MSHSAA investigates and doesn't cave simply because she's high profile.

What was USA basketball thinking? Really, paying high school kids money?

They weren't thinking. In the name of marketing, Nike, Adidas, Underarmour,Mizuno, and now USA basketball continue to blur the line of what is amateur status. It starts with " hey, wear these shoes" to "hey we'll give your organization $15k to fall under our umbrella and play in our league" to "hey, here's a little spending money" It's starting to get really sloppy and the only one's that are affected are these kids. Yes, someone should lose their job with USA basketball for not dotting i's and crossing t's but at the end of the day its way bigger than that!!

I don't know this for a fact but I don't believe that these 3 girls were the first rising seniors to ever "play up" on a U18 team. Was this the first year that USA basketball paid "stipends" to players, making this a new process for them and they made an honest mistake? Or was this money paid out in the past and everybody stayed quiet about it? USA self reported their mistake but did someone speak up first? Lots of questions still need to be answered. I think what's unique about the Blackwell story is that I believe she also played for the Adidas Nations team as well. Was a stipend provided for those as well or was all of her expenses covered?

Appears private schools have more advantages than we thought.
