Best Missouri HIGH SCHOOL player you've seen.

Yeah, I think you gotta be lot a top three in the nation recruit to even be on this list. It is a small list.

Yea the State of Missouri has produced some high level talent over the years and these guys are naming people who never went on to start in College. Kind of depressing if thats the best they've ever seen.

"Best" is subjective.

I will say Caleb Schaffitzel from Fair Grove was as impressive as any small school player I have watched. Good speed and size. Wasn't a major D1 or NFL talent, but still impressive.

I'm sticking with Tony VanZant from Hazlewood Central. He was playing chess, and the little people chasing him were playing checkers. Too bad he got hurt. Parade magazine's national player of the year. #1 recruit in the nation.

great stuff never heard of him as I moved to KC in 02

Best I actually saw in person was Brian keys john Burroughs. My college roommate played with rusty medaeris, called him "relentless"

Alan Cockrell, Joplin Parkwood 1980. Pre game of championship game he was kicking 50 yd fg, punting 50 yds, and he was the stud qb who started at Tennessee as a freshman. He was the player on a very dominant team. Van Zant was obviously special one too.
I wish Cockrell would have chosen football instead of baseball. But, he was drafted 9th overall in the MLB draft (1 pick ahead of Mark McGwire), so you can't hardly blame him for going with baseball.

I saw him wrestle at a tourney in the 90’s, freak of nature. Him and Coach Norman.

Jarius Byrd stood out to me in my 8+ years of watching the state games.

Best from my area that I saw? Derrick Tipler-RB from New Madrid. I wasn’t around for the Faulkner or Bourbon years. Or Kony Ealy.

Schwent wasn’t bad either.

A lot of good ones in person.
Byrd also at state. Put on quite a show.
Zeke at Monett
Shannon Crouch multiple times. Most memorably against Springfield Catholic.

Tony VanZant was obviously the most heralded. Just found out Meat and I were watching the same game that day.

DGB I thought was overrated even back then. Talented but saw the attitude issue.

Many others I’ve seen and so many on this thread I wish I could have. Heard a lot about Mark Smith but never saw him in person.

Payne Stewart. 1975 PC vs Greenwood. He wasn't much of a QB. Turned out to be a player, though.

Zeke in high school was impressive for 30 to 50yd rushing tds goal line in state title games not so much....especially the year they lost to a Dylan cole led Rogersville team

FACTS:

Ezekiel Elliott
21 Carries 150 yards 2 TDs

Dylan Cole
21 Carries 75 yards 0 TDs

Nice to meet you Dylan.

I wasnt disputing who won, Just who played better and more impressive between Dylan (LOL) and Zeke.

But WHO REALLY won when you remember:
Zeke is a 2-Time All American in College & High School All American
CFP MVP when we ran for 476 & 5 TDs in 2 games
National Champion
Top 5 NFL Draft pick
3 Time Pro Bowler
1st Team All Pro
CURRENT ALL TIME LEADER IN RUSHING YARDS PER GAME
&&&&&

Will end his life making well over $100,000,000

so who really won, Veerman??

It's hard to get open against double coverage, plus a QB running for his life and can't just throw up prayers. It's is still a team sport
So shouldn't the greatest player ever, or even just a great player, be a factor in the game, because he was not much of a factor in the Webb game? He was great against Seneca....lol! If he was double covered the whole time, but i don't remember that being the case, but lets say he was, shouldn't someone else be open? I expected to see a man among boys when i went to that game with all the hype, was very disappointed in his play especially with his effort level when they weren't throwing to him. So maybe they were out coached and Webb just did a better job taking him out of the game.
I'm not saying Grant was the best ever, because there are alot of names on here i haven't watched play. But, I never saw a team out scheme Grant Wistrom on either side of the ball, he could do whatever he wanted at Tight End or as a Wide out, and definitely at Def End. He was a factor in every game, regardless of who they played.

I see what you're trying to do but No Can Do. Much easier to take a player out of the Offense when he is the entire offense. And the team is actually horrible around him.

DGB, regardless of your hate, left high school as the #1 Player in the Country, All-American, and the All-Time leader in Receiving Yards. He's a more accomplished High School Player than anyone who ever played at Webb and its not close.
He's Also probably easily the best MO player in the last 20 years. Zeke being up there and Sheldon Richardson being up there as well.

I/We played Lincoln Prep in a playoff game in 1986 against a guy named Jerome Toliver. Best HS football player I had ever seen. I think he picked baseball over football upon graduation.

Totally have to agree. I’ve watched a lot of HS football here in Missouri, and I’ve never seen a kid make such an impact on a game like he did.

(That one had me scratch my head as well)

I usually only brag about this to family members but my freshman team held Zeke under 100 yards rushing. Unfortunately he also played safety and picked off 2 passes in the first quarter, returning one for a TD. We didn’t throw deep the rest of the game.

Yes, Zeke was(is) an impressive beast of an athlete. But, Brock made plays out of nothing and made others around him better. Kid was a competitor in every sense of the word.

I saw Grant Winstrom in high school. He was a beast , especially on defensive side. I'll take him over DGB anytime. Sad to see great talent go to waste. Wistrom more than fulfilled his.

but we arent talking about living up to it at the next level are we, we're talking about HS Football.

If the question was about the biggest waste of talent and biggest bust then DGB would be it.

Justin Smith - Jefferson City

He absolutely destroyed offensive lineman and the QB. Was a man among boys. Since he wasn't on the offensive side of the ball he wasn't the most flashy or electric player I saw, but from pure dominance nobody I've seen better. Future NFL HOF IMO

One of the absolute best NFL players from Missouri. He was still awesome in his 30s

1) DGB
2) Grant Winstrom
3) Drew Lock/Phil Johnson/Skylar Thompson
4) Damon Frost/Dan Kneeshaw
5) Dylan Cole/Joe Zimmmer/ Travis Britz
6) Dontae Manning/Michael Keck

I played against Byrd and he was pretty damn good. He scored every touchdown in that game and presents was forsure known on defense. Never played against anyone that filled the run up that quick playing from 10+ yards.
