I'm sticking with Tony VanZant from Hazlewood Central. He was playing chess, and the little people chasing him were playing checkers. Too bad he got hurt. Parade magazine's national player of the year. #1 recruit in the nation.

Mark Smith from Webb City. Grant may have had the better career in college and NFL but Mark was on a different level in high school.
If we were picking teams and I had first choice,Mark Smith without a doubt. I remember him picking a pass off in Tuscaloosa and the announcer says “that young man runs exceptionally well for a linebacker” lol

Michael Harper from Hickman Mills who played at USC and in the NFL with the Jets.

Brandon Lloyd of Blue Springs.

Gary Anderson of Hickman

Alan Cockrell, Joplin Parkwood 1980. Pre game of championship game he was kicking 50 yd fg, punting 50 yds, and he was the stud qb who started at Tennessee as a freshman. He was the player on a very dominant team. Van Zant was obviously special one too.

Who was the kid on Rich Hills title team? They only had 12 kifs and I think he was 8 of them.
I haven't seen a lot of "name" players in person.

Sheldon Richardson was something, he would play RB, then TE, then DT, LB, return man. Pro bowl player.

Blaine Gabbert has the big arm, was much faster than people realized.

Jeremy Maclin, very electric. Consensus all American twice and a pro bowl.

Adrian Clayborn was a really good player. Consensus college all American.

Daryl Jackson QB for Webster Groves was really good. Got in trouble before he got to mizzou but he was one of the better qbs I’ve seen.

Mario Whitney could sure run it. Very brief college career.

Patrick Johnson from Potosi was really good. Great career at Purdue and brief NFL stint.

Only saw him once but Kory Faulkner from Ste Gen could really throw it.

Muhammad Abdul Kadir sp? From Eureka was a really good running back.

Jarius Byrd of Clayton was a one man wrecking crew. What an athlete.

Will Compton - North County

Michael Scherer - MICDS

Colton Jackson - CBC

Jordan Webb - Union

DGB and Al Young were good but against Webb they couldn't do anything.

The one player I remember that sticks out to me, besides Wistrom is ...

Jarius Byrd.

That kid won it for Clayton. He was everything. I remember seeing the hole open up for the RB for Webb for an easy TD and there he was, standing like a brick wall and did not budge. Kid was incredible. Believe they had to forfeit the games the year prior for recruiting him but it was worth it for that one year. He was amazing.

Pretty sure Young returned a kick or punt for a touchdown against Webb? Could be mistaken, but that's not "doing nothing"

I don't remember that, I believe they shut them out in the Semi's but in the Title Game the following year they scored a few but that was the QB, I believe.

I was going to say Dan Alexander, he was an absolute monster

I saw him wrestle at a tourney in the 90’s, freak of nature. Him and Coach Norman.

Jarius Byrd stood out to me in my 8+ years of watching the state games.

Best from my area that I saw? Derrick Tipler-RB from New Madrid. I wasn’t around for the Faulkner or Bourbon years. Or Kony Ealy.

Schwent wasn’t bad either.

Other than Zeke, the best running back I watched play was Ladell Betts from Blue Springs. Made it to the NFL but cut short by injury.

The question was, who was the best high school player we've ever seen. That's subjective. I never saw DGB live, so I named the best I have seen. Same as anyone else responding to this thread.
Reading comprehension is a hard subject to teach man!!!
