Bears to open in national tournament

NEW YORK -- The 16-team field for the 26th edition of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off was announced Monday (August 16) by NIT Selection Committee chair C.M. Newton.
Missouri State opens play on Tuesday, Nov. 16 against Arkansas State in a first round game in the South Regional in Knoxville, Tenn. The MSU-Arkansas State winner will play the Tennessee-Belmont winner the next night. The first-round losers will also meet up in the consolation round on Nov. 17 in Knoxville.
The Bears defeated the Red Wolves in Jonesboro last December by a score of 75-64. MSU leads the all-time series against A-State, 19-9. The Bears have won the only previous meeting against Tennessee in the second round of the 1999 NCAA Tournament, 81-51, and have never played Belmont.
Missouri State is the No. 6 seed in the field, while Tennessee is No. 2. Other top-eight seeds are: 1. Villanova, 3. Wake Forest, 4. UCLA, 5. VCU, 7. George Washington, and 8. Nevada. The winner of the South Regional will play the winner of the East Regional on Wednesday, Nov. 24 at Madison Square Garden in New York with the championship and third-place games scheduled for Nov. 26.
The three highest seeds that do not advance to New York are assured of hosting two consolation games in the tournament, Nov. 22-23, and all 16 participants are guaranteed of playing four games.
The Bears are in the process of finalizing the remainder of their 2010-11 non-conference schedule, which should be available in the coming days. Martin begins his third season at the helm of the Bears who finished last season with a 24-12 overall record after winning the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
