Bates News-Press girls track athlete of year
St. Joseph News-Press
Alexis Bates wasted little time in making a name for herself in the sprint events.
Central's freshman speedster set school records in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes this season on her way to a state championship and state runner-up finish in the sprint events.
Bates won the 100 in 11.92, the 12th-best time recorded at the state meet and only the 19th at under 12 seconds. She followed that with a second-place showing in the 200.
Bates initially broke the school records - set by Cely Rucker in 1989 - during the Class 4 District 8 meet with an 11.77 in the 100 and a 25.05 in the preliminaries of the 200. In that same meet, Bates also anchored the 4x200 relay - which also included Jasmine Turner, Anissa Demarr and Shelby Bratton - to a school-record 1:45.95 in the finals.
The 100 and 4x200 records still hold, while the 200 was bettered two weeks later with a 24.96, which was her first under 25 seconds, in her state runner-up finish.
