81st "Cass County Clash"

By Brett Jones

It's ancient rivalry week in Cass County, as the Harrisonville Wildcats and the Pleasant Hill Roosters get together for the 81st "Cass County Clash" at Eklund Field in Pleasant Hill. The rivalry on the gridiron unofficially started in 1923 when the Harrisonville High School team played a Pleasant Hill town team defeating them by a score of 19-0. The two high school's would officially begin playing each other in 1924. They would play each other annually until 1986, with the exception of 1943 due to World War II. They would even play each other twice in 1927. Both of those games would end in 0-0 and 6-6 tie ball games. From 1987 through 1997 the ancient rivals did not play each other in football. The rivalry would resume in 1998 and 1999, as both school's were placed in the same district for state playoffs. The rivialry would then take two year break. They would meet again in 2002 and 2003 in district playoffs. After a five year break they would renew their old rivalry as both school's would join the Missouri River Valley West Conference in 2008. In 80 meeting the Wildcats have won 49 games, the Roosters winning 25, and 6 times both teams walked off the field tied with no resolution to this ancient rivalry.

Awesome post! I love looking at historical data. Am glad to see one of the resident Harrisonville posters return as well. Speaking of which, how does Harrisonville look this season? That week one score caught my attention.

Good stuff. Chillicothe played Trenton 88 times , between 1909 and 1999. Cameron is our 2nd longest; this year will be game # 83.

In your opinion which was the best game you’ve seen in the series and your favorite?

In your opinion which was the best game you’ve seen in the series and your favorite?
It's probably the 2013 game which Pleasant Hill won 31-29. That's hard for me to say as a Harrisonville guy. It was the first time a Pleasant Hill team had beaten a Harrisonville squad since 1982. The kid that kicked the winning field goal for Pleasant Hill played for me in youth football at Harrisonville when he was in 3rd grade. He could actually kick extra points as a 3rd grader, which were worth 2 points, and running a conversion was worth 1 point. He never missed a extra point kick all season. So he was quit a weapon to have. He only played that one season in Harrisonville. He drilled that kick against Harrisonville from around 35 yards on the road with time expiring and the hopes of a town looking to beat their historic rival for the first time in 31 years. He drilled it. Tanner Pettit would go on to play at Missouri Western in St. Joe. He became a legend in Pleasant Hill that night. That's what makes rivalry games great.

How is Harrisonville looking this year? That week one score really caught my eye.
They have a really good running back. Defense needs some work still. They were down 24-0 after the first quarter at Maryville. They went up by 10 in the 4th quarter but gave up 12, losing 42-40. They have to find that win every quarter mentality.
