7th hour athletics

I know many schools no longer have this, however some still do.

So what are thoughts on this? Pro's con's?
Pro's: I'm ,any cases schools do not have lights on their fields, so a earlier start time helps with that and making sure they can practice before it gets too dark. I know in some cases schools have offered a credit for those participating in athletic hour for sports. It helps participation. Coaches are getting home a decent time to spend with family.

Cons: Can't think of any. Reason why schools stopped doing this is because of the non coach faculty feeling it is a extra hour to give coaches "special treatment". Cant have that...(sarcasm)

Some schools have it in the morning and run practices into it.

I believe you are thinking about 0 hour. Completely different than athletic hour. 0 hour is usually for weight lifting classes to allow student athletes to take more upper level classes.

That always drove me nuts, that "special treatment" for coaches.....you know the ones working an extra 20+ hours a week on their teams. The ones who are there before daylight and leave after dark.

Other great reasons would be kids start and end practice earlier, so they get home and have more time to do school work. For sports that have a lot of early outs, they aren't missing anything then in the last hr of the day.

I was always told it was impossible to schedule all those kids into 1 hour. Never got a response on "well how do they do it for marching band for 1st hr"?

Nope. Know of a few schools that run into first hour from mornings. Just like using 7th hour to start practices. 1st hour they finish..

When I played we had 7th hour athletics, we started by 2:20 every day got out by 5PM every day. My kids are now in it they don't have it, they start at 3:30 everyday and don't get out until 6:30 usally by the time they are dressed and get to leave the locker room. That means depending on where you live you might not get home till closer to 7, you have to eat, do homework. That leaves no time to be with family or do kid stuff.

We keep wondering why praticapation is down, If I were a kid why would I want to do that? This should not be about special treatment of the coaches, this should be what is best for the kids!! My child still has an hour of PE they basically walk the track that hour? Why can't that be rolled to the end of the day, they are probable getting more exercise in sports then just walking the track for the time they are in PE? It just doesn't make sense to me?

Pros...Coaches and kids get home earlier. Increased participation b/c of the previous reason. Facilities sharing is easier b/c you've added another hour in the day. PE classes are less crowded if you give a PE credit for the class, which you should. Athletes that leave early for contests actually miss less class time, b/c a lot of the time they're leaving during the athletic hour.

Cons...The scholars (see nerds) of the world will talk about limiting the academic opportunities of your athletes b/c of the need to take the athletics class at the end of the day. But there's hardly a school out there now that doesn't offer online (either through their own district or through a 3rd party like Launch) and/or summer classes to offset that "problem". So basically it's just the pi$$ing and moaning of the nerds.

Those same nerds end up graduating with 60+ college hours because they are taking dual course credit classes and not the PE classes. Crazy to me why it is not done more.

But…but…they get compensated for that!

We once estimated about 78 cents/hour.
Well stipends haven't really adjusted for inflation the last 20 yrs. So I have to imagine that would be a steal on todays market.

Was talking about the nerd teachers and admins. You better believe our kids will be doing the same with dual credit. The more hours we can get for free, the better. But again, 7th hour athletics doesn't stop that from happening. There are a multitude of ways to take those classes now.

I never understood how people could bellyache about an “athletics” period 7th hour, but allowing the marching band a class period during the day is never a problem.

Does the music industry provide more employment opportunities than the health/athletics industry does?
That's the rub...but those music folks have always hidden behind the curricular component of "band" class. I'm not sure how there's a difference between that and athletics being a PE credit.

Most COC schools already have an hour dedicated to weights each day. Not sure you can dedicate a 2nd hour to a separate athletics class.

Why couldn't you?
Many schools have an hour for band, then have another hour for Jazz band, or one hour for choir and then another for show choir?

Thats why you make your last hour of the day advisory, split your advisory by activities and use the advisory to start practice no matter what the activity or sport.

My question would be however what if someone does band choir and sports?
