The Advance volleyball team claimed its third-straight title at the Perryville Tournament on Saturday.
The defending Class 1 state champion Hornets breezed by pool play and did not drop a single set with straight-set sweeps of Perryville’s junior varsity (25-12, 25-10), Southern Reynolds (25-11, 25-07) and Bismarck (25-11, 25-06). This sent them to the 10-team Gold Bracket, where the top two teams from each pool advanced. The Hornets rolled over Class 1 rival Lesterville (25-19, 25-14) and then went on to eliminate the host Pirates (25-18, 25-14) in the semifinals which put the Hornets on a collision court with a familiar foe in Valle Catholic, the team whose season the Hornets ended last year in sectionals. Down a key player in the first set, the Hornets fell 25-23 but sophomore setter Alandry Below was back on the court for the second and third sets which the Hornets won with relative ease (25-19, 25-15) to hoist the tournament plaque for the third straight time and improve their current record to 16-1.
Leopold, which finished third in its pool, went on to win the championship of the five-team Silver Bracket. The Wildcats (17-6-4) downed Perryville’s JV (25-18, 28-26) in the play-in game and then proceeded to sweep Cape Girardeau Central (25-23, 25-10) in the semifinals followed by a three-set thriller of a victory over Fredericktown (25-18, 24-26, 25-20) for the championship.
