What are your thoughts on the 1a/2a sectionals - good move for the sport? Only minus I can come up with is it sure shorten the season for regular meets..

As a class 1 coach I was not excitted about sectionals because it shortened an already short season but when my 300m hurdler fell on the last hurdle at districts and went from first to third and then won at state it is hard to argue with the extended opportunities. It does seem odd that the classes with the latest basketball has the earliest track finish.

Sectionals is such a fun meet to watch, I am glad the lower classes added it. While you may have to drop a meet, think of the great meet you are gaining.

The test of the need for sectionals I believe is how many district 3's and 4's scored at state. Does anyone know the percentages of the 3's,and the 4,s?. Were there cases of the top four at districts all scoring at state?

How true about the basketball season overlapping. I think pretty much most if not all basketball coaches will agree that the basketball season is too long and needs to be shortened. I love basketball, but the season is "crazy" long.

In 1A boys, the 3200 Relay top 4 were all from the same district - #1 from east central and SE MO. The only other times 4 placed in the top 8 were from the same sectional were in the 1A boys 100, 1A boys 400 and 1A boys 1600. The 100 group all came from district 7 (the Polo group). the 400 and 1600 all came from #1. The number of times 3 or more placed in the top 8 in each class from the same district (meaning without sectional, the final would have been different) - 16 times in 1A boys, 6 times in 1A girls, 5 times 2A boys and 3 times in 2A girls.
All in all, I thought the meet would make more difference than what it would, but the effects were minimal at the 2A level. However, the sectional meet was a very good meet.
The BB deal a year ago to start the season after Thanksgiving was stupid. Most BB coaches I talked to wanted the season shortened at the end, not at the beginning.

Wow, those stats pretty much sum up the need for sectionals! Back in the 80's I had a girl hurdler that had the third or fourth best times in the state for three years. With the district/state system she never got to state in her speciality.

I am class 3, but this applies to all sectionals. The only thing I would like to see changed is for the throws to get 6 attempts not 4. If you make it to the finals in District, you get 3 throws in the prelims, and 3 in the finals. Why not let the 8 qualifiers have 2 more throws? The event only last 20 minutes!

Class 1 and 2 were well over due for the addition of sectionals. I've seen many athletes not get out of districts and later find out they could have medaled in their event. Still though sectionals couldn't help everyone out. I saw an athlete in class 2 that didn't make it in the triple jump, when he could have won atleast one of the other sectionals. Overall though sectionals has helped a lot of athletes this year, it's kind of the luck of the draw which sectional your in.

Not sure about about District #3's and #4's but I do know of a sectional #4 who took 3rd at State in Class 2 Girls Triple Jump...Ashley Cowsert of Hollister got in with a 34' 1/2" and had three other girls have PR's (and two of whom had never jumped 34+)at Sectionals only to see those girls finish behind her at State (the other girls had a good showing with a 4th, 8th and 9th)...I think the sectional format is tremendous for Class 1 and 2 schools...the competition at the Sectional is amazing and it makes for a really fun District meet to allow some kids who are at the brink of success to possibly break through with a 3rd or 4th place finish and gain confidence by moving on to Sectionals...
