Girls soccer players just as likely to suffer concussions as boys, so why all the attention on footb

Four clear jars sit atop a wooden shelf, each containing a human brain. An actual human brain. A faded-yellow liquid, the color aging books turn, surrounds each brain, almost seeming to make them float. These brains are just for display, but nearby a hundred or so others are waiting to be examined for various neurodegenerative diseases on this morning in early August at Boston's VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank, tucked discreetly behind the V.A. Hospital.

There will be a brain dissection in a few hours. Most of the brains are housed in large freezers, set at minus 80 degrees Celsius. It's eerie, peering inside those freezers. Each is filled with dozens of small, square containers, which hold various portions of brains. The containers are stacked on top of one another, identified by seemingly indecipherable coding.

These are people. People who had dreams, athletic prowess. Families, memories. Shortcomings, talents. Joys, disappointments. People now reduced to letters and numbers.

Almost all were younger than age 32 when they died. About half took their own lives. Forty percent have been found to have CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease found in people with a history of repetitive brain trauma.

Most of the brains belonged to men. To football players.

Less than 5 percent belonged to women.

Yet, we know that female athletes have endured repetitive blows to the head, too. Girls soccer players, in particular, have been found to be about as likely to suffer concussions as boys football players—and three times more likely than boys soccer players. But very little is known about what that means for the future, because researchers are hardly studying the long-term consequences of repetitive hits over time in women.

"They're definitely still focused on football. They can't get past football," says neuropathologist Dr. Ann McKee, the director of the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank, whose research has been integral to our expanding understanding of CTE. "Women aren't even on the radar."

That's a problem, McKee goes on, because while we don't have enough research to know how differently head trauma affects women than men over time, we do know that the effect does seem to be different. And more high school girls are playing soccer than ever—394,105 in 2018-19, up from 356,116 in 2009-10 and 17,970 in 1978-79, according to the NFHS. It's a trend that will likely only accelerate after the U.S. women's national team's gold-medal winning run at the World Cup this summer.

Over the past decade, women have played a major role in the narrative of men's football brain trauma. Mostly, they've been quoted in articles as advocates, as confidantes. The image has become increasingly familiar: the mothers, wives, girlfriends, sisters, daughters, cast in supporting, caregiving roles, mourning and questioning why this happened to the men close to them who have suffered playing a game they love.

But women are not only on the tragic periphery of CTE and head-trauma issues. They're at the heart of them. Though their place in it has mostly gone unexplored, untold, female athletes have their own stories to tell.

Do facilities matter to kids?

I was talking with a friend of mine who has a son in Webster Groves, his remark was, Webster is down in football because the facilitates aren't as good as other in the area, and that is drawing kids to Vianney, or parents move to Kirkwood, etc.

Webster has grass field, its not in great shape, locker rooms are old, everything is old at their field, per my friend.

He said for a class 5 school they have maybe 40 kids on their roster.

Facts about LN

Lot of misconceptions about LN on this forum. Probably won't do a bit of good but here some facts anyway.

Players do not get full rides. School does not have money for that and some elite players have transferred due to finances.

Players do 6 AM weights in the off-season and there is 100 percent participation since that is the standard.

Players attend Saturday morning study halls and books come first. Never heard of LN player not academically qualifying

The most talented player on the team is treated the same as the least talented player on the team.

If you think there is no discipline ask a player who has had to run the hill or the steps.

Coach Reed will find a place for you to play whether it is D1, D2, D3, NAIA, or Juco and devotes the entire summer to taking players across the country to camps.

It really is a family and resembles a small town program in that aspect. Truly are a crusader for life.

I could list more facts about the school itself and its academic success. You can dislike LN but the way Coach Reed runs his program is worthy of your respect.

Long time Lamar fan passed away last week

Bill O’Brien passed away last Friday of a heart attack while working at Walmart. He was a huge Lamar Tiger Fan rarely missing a game. In fact just that morning he had posted about how it was the home opener and had a Lamar shirt on from several years ago. He had a son, Billy O’Brien who played. He was #74 graduating with the class of 2014. Billy and his dad both were known to be quite mouthy and I really think both of them used to post back then, but Bill was a great guy who always made you laugh! My son was his age so there’s a lot of memories playing football, baseball, and basketball since grade school. Just asking for prayers for his family on the sudden loss.

Class 3 is WIDEEEEE Open

Mookie Cooper, the best player in the St Louis Area and Ohio State commit is enrolling in Pattonville, leaving Trinity. Article says he’ll be able to graduate early and start College in January. By far the best player in the Class and workhouse for the #1 ranked team is out.

This to me puts Blair Oaks in the drivers seat, Trinity of course has other weapons and we’ll see on Saturday vs Lutheran North if they are still the same offense without the best player on the team.

Preseason Football Rankings

Here's the first media poll of the year. I always think it's interesting to compare the first and last polls of the year and see what's changed.

Probably the highest ranking Joplin's seen in awhile. I don't remember seeing Carthage at #2 since they were class 4 ranked just behind Webb City. I would have to look back but seems unusual to not see Webb as #1.

Small public schools have zero chance

Right off the bat I want to say I think the coaches at Trinity, Lutheran North, Lutheran St Charles, Ofallon Christian and now Duschene are good men. I coached high school football for 28 years and I don't know any of the coaches real well but I do have coaching friends that know them well. I coached in class 3 public school . John Burroughs was the team we could never get by. In the last couple of years the talent level coming to Trinity and Lutheran North is unreal. 2 years ago a whole team of 8th graders went to Christian they are now Juniors they will be very good. The Lutheran program is now benefitting from many 9th graders that went to Lutheran a year ago. Duschene has 12 frosh from the same team that won the 8th grade super bowl on their team. I am in no way blaming these coaches are kids wanting to play with their friends. The point is small public schools have no chance. Lamar was the exception but those days are over. Lutheran North and Cardinal Ritter have gotten better with many great players at those schools. Class 2 will be won when those play each in districts. Class 3 you have Trinity who will be better this year and you wonder why they have a couple of unbelievable frosh come to their school plus what they have coming back. How Blair Oaks is able to be on Trinity level is awesome but that is rare for a public school that is small. St Charles West is loaded but not Trinity level.
