UAW strike

I am torn about the UAW strike. I get it that the Big 3 are having record profits and executives are making outlandish salaries and bonuses, and the union members want their fair share. I was surprised a google search claims the ave union salary is only $52K and hourly wage $25 per hr. The guys I know that work at STL plants make a lot more than $52K, but they've worked there a long time and work tons of overtime. A 40% pay increase sounds huge, plus a 32 hr work week. I worry about what effect it would have on the price of cars and eventually the economy.
Take my nephew for example who works at GM in Wentzville. He's worked there 25+ yrs, makes about $35/hr, and works 6-7 days a week/10-12 hrs per day for what seems like forever as he takes all the overtime he can get at about $50 per hr. For the sake of argument, if he averages 60 hrs per week he is making about $125K per year currently. A 40% increase would be $175K. Management if offering a 20% increase that would be $150K per year for him. His job - he drives cars from the end of assembly line to the parking lot and parks them!!!!!
