Since Joplin joined the COC, my view of the conference has been a three-tier approach:
THE GAUNTLET DIVISION
Webb City
Nixa
Joplin
Carthage
NOTES -- Imagine playing these four teams on four consecutive weeks, thus The Gauntlet. While each program enjoys whatever success is earned in the COC, each program has its eyes on larger goals and each has proven since the Joplin merger capable of making a run to the state championship game or at least the state semifinals. To win the COC a program must either go 4-0 vs. The Gautlet or at worst 3-1.
2023 -- The Gauntlet Division will go 1, Nixa. 2, Joplin. 3, Webb City.
DIVISION II
Republic
Neosho
Ozark/Carl Junction
NOTES -- This is where the COC has more questions than answers. Each of these programs (again only since the Joplin merger because mind you the first two years CJ was in the COC, the program was a combined 13-3 in 2016/2017 in league games) tend to flux with the talent pool available and changes in coaching staffs. Obviously Republic is trending up and looking to advance into the Gauntlet Division for 2023 and are probably poised to do just that. But going 1-3 against the Gauntlet is not enough to move up into the Gauntlet Division, this year needs to be a 3-1 or at worst 2-2 against the Gauntlet. Neosho proved last year offensively they could score points, if they find any defense to get enough stops this year perhaps they could be the team that makes the move up. Jury is still out on Ozark and Carl Junction until Friday night. Once those two play each other I'll have a lot better feel about where each team is at with new coaches, new systems and how the talent has adapted.
2023 -- 4, Republic. 5, Neosho. 6, Carthage. 7/8 Ozark/CJ winner.
DIVISION III
Willard
Branson
NOTES -- It is always tough to get a read on these two programs. In 2019, Willard had the look and talent in the pipeline to make a push up toward the top of the Division II, but regressed the next two seasons and have won only five conference games since that 2019 season. Branson, since Joplin joined the COC, has won 10 conference games. It is a tough conference to build a program. I'm of the belief in order to build, it's a matter of being competitive vs. each opponent. A 21-7 loss does feel a lot different than a running clock 49-0 game at halftime. For years we have all heard the "run the ball, run the clock, play D, shorten the game and give ourselves a chance to win in the fourth quarter" quote from coaches throughout this region. Well, it can be effective. But it was Larry Bunn who said to me once, "Sometimes it's not the X's and O's, it's the Jimmy's and the Joe's." I don't miss trying keep stats for a Larry Bunn game, but I do miss his play calling and covering the old Big 8 Conference.
2023 -- 9, Branson. 10. Willard.
