You think the schools in California just became better recruiters?

Agreed, until you come together as a group, or unionize, to fight for higher wages. Obviously has it's pros and cons.

The way I view it, the education you are receiving is the base salary, but to say that I can't profit off of my own likeness is crazy to me.
You can profit off your own likeness, I have no issue with that. If you do the NCAA says you are not long allowed to play for there association, I also have no issue with that either. All I'm saying is you have choices. Make your choice and live with it. Any of these players can go pro at any time. Why should Trevor Lawrence stick around at Clemson for a couple more years, when he could go to the CFL and make $100K a year for a couple years before entering the NFL draft. He is making a choice to stay and that means he has to play by NCAA rule like them or not.

So the Head Coach at Missouri State should be paid the same as the Head Coach at Alabama too?
Coaches are university employees, not students. I wouldn't pay the coach at MSU the same as Saban. But kind of the same deal. MSU's coach can leave for a more lucrative deal at any time, he chose to be there.

I agree. They also have the choice to stay and fight for fair pay. In the end, they are compensated for their work, therefore making them employees. Employee's always have the choice to ask/fight for more pay.

Tua Tagovailoa could perform just as well at Missouri State and wouldn't be know outside of SWMO. A large chunk of his value is tied to Alabama. I don't think he should be compensated because he happens to be on a bigger stage. If you want to be compensated based on performance go to the CFL. You could spend 2 or 4 years there, get paid $50K+ per season, then enter the draft.

does Missouri State Bring in Billions on A TV contract with ESPN and CBS????

Simple fix.... If athletes want endorsement money, allow them into the league right out of HS. They can sign whatever deal they want. They can spend 2 years on the practice squads if needed to add the strength. Expand the practice squads if needed. Problem solved. As they stated, most would not make anything if it was not the college putting them into that position! They are changing the whole process for a very few.

NCAA rules don’t mean crap. They are not law in the state of California or anyplace else. Universities are owned by the states and pretty much have to follow state law

That may very well be true, but here is the problem. CA law goes into effect which clearly puts those schools out of compliance with the NCAA. The NCAA can even with the new law not allow them to play or be members of their private organization or share money from negotiated contracts (TV revenue). The supreme court actually ruled on this very subject already saying that the NCAA can institute it's own rules for fellow members. So if the schools follow state law the NCAA can remove them from their organization. I don't think this law does anything unless the member schools change the NCAA bylaws.

You would agree that Neither the school, nor player, could do it on their own, correct?

The school/program will be there long after the player is. The program can do it without the player. So my answer is yes the college can do it on their own. Maybe Lebron is waiting to build his own college program for Bronnie by paying top HS athletes endorsement money to attend a college with his son? What is stopping other professional athlete's that own a business to pay top dollar to top hs athletes to attend their alma mater? I just think pandora's box is opening up here.

Without the top athletes that move on as professionals right out of hs. Again, that is a small percentage of players. There will always be athletes ready to play at the college level.
Even without the top level guys, there just be new "top level" collegiate players. The schools will still make huge profits off of the players. All that is changing is that these players will now get a cut of what their name becomes worth.

I guess what I really don't understand is why people are so against college players profiting off of their own name?

I think most of us agree that athletes deserve something. If they are selling my jersey number, then seems fair that I get a cut.

To me the problem stands from if I am a big USC booster who made millions off of a chain of car dealerships, I could hire the hot shot qb to shoot a commercial for me and pay him $150,000. University of Texas can't do that. Makes for an unfair advantage for the CA schools. I get there are only so many kids this will affect, but you could see how it could be manipulated.

I agree 100%. That's why the rest of these states need to pass it, or if the NCAA still wants to keep some control, amend their rules.

Dominoes are going to fall quickly,,,,saw on the news there are 7 other states looking at the same legislation.

NCAA has ignored it so long they have no right to bitch when other people step in to fix the thing.

Next thing that needs to go is the entire NCAA tax except not for profit BS they enjoy

Why should the NFL change their rules because people don’t like NCAA rules? This hurt the NFL, no way they should do that.

I say compensate all student athletes the same or allow them to work with job restrictions and income limits. That would address, in my opinion a bigger problem, of struggling student athletes from other sports who struggle just live and provides a loophole for the more notable athletes to be paid by boosters. A minimum wage job would be much more valuable to some than some million dollar endorsement deal for a few.
